Hello paulyp40 and welcome to the forum.

It seems that you posted in the wrong area; you should have posted in the “Avast Free/Pro/Suite” section of the forum for this type of problem, but we will help you here since you started here.

  1. What product of Avast are you installing (Free, Pro, AIS)? I’m assuming you are installing the latest version of 5.1.889. If not, please let us know.

  2. What is your OS?

  3. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:

  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software

If you had a previous antivirus on this machine, you will need to uninstall it per the vendor’s instructions PRIOR to reinstalling Avast (see below) and rebooting your machine to remove all remnants.

Make sure your firewall is allowing Avast access (in/out).

If you need to do an Avast uninstall and clean install:

  1. Save a copy of Avast 5.1.889 for the product you need and save it to your HDD:
    Free: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
    Pro: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
    AIS: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all Avast versions and products).
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall all previous products and versions of Avast on this machine at this time.
  6. Reboot.
  7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.
  9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know the answers to your questions and we can instruct you better. Thank you.
