Welcome to the forum.

Was this a VPS update that you initiated deliberately or was this an automatic update on startup of your system?

Thanks. It was one I initiated as the automatic update did not seem to be working.

Can you please post the last 50-100 lines of the avast log files:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log

Sounds familiar, very familiar ;D

Are you using the trial version?
How many days from the trial period last?
If you uninstall version 892, download the last one and install from the scratch, will it work?

I’ll uninstall and let you know. It is the trial version. Is there a problem withthat? Should I reinstall the trial or go for the full version?

No, but when did you install it? The trial period is only 60 days…

If you uninstall the trial version you’ll lose the period. It will be just 6 days. It’s an antipiracy feature.

Or register the Home version if you’re allowed to do so (Home and Non-commercial user).

I hate to appear completely stupid…but here goes. I believe I started with the trial version. I then registered it, which should now make it the home version? or not?

As you can tell…I can’t tell.

How do I tell, and what do I do then?

Did you receive the registry key by email? Did you add the registration key into avast?
See the tutorial: http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm
Please take a look here: http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-invalid-license-number.html

This license key is a trial one…

Got it. So it really is very simple, uninstall the trial version and install the home version…correct?

If so…thanks for the help.

Simpler than that… just add the Home key and avast will be ‘transformed’ into the Home version.
You only need a ‘clean’ installation from the scratch if the first option does not work
