Can't log on to email account

Wow, am I lost here on this cyber-board …

Ever since I recently installed Avast I can not access my email provider. Help !

Maybe this helps: http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=910

Nikita,

What Mail Client are you using?
Have you used the Mail Wizard in Avast to properly configure the program?
We are all here to help you so don’t worry about not being familiar with the board.

;D

Whoa. It all sounds like gobbledy-gook to me. Any one out there with “baby-steps” for me ?

Choose Start → avast! antivirus → Mail Wizard Protection from your Start Menu Programs (Windows).
Or, type “C:\Program Files\ … \Avast4\ashPopWz.exe” on Run command from Windows Menu (the … is where you install the avast! program).

Or see, http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=538

By the way, for a non native English spoker, what a hell is “gobbledy-gook”…

Good luck. 8)

Gobbledygook is unclear language that sounds like turkeys “talking”. Hope This Helps. (And yes, It Is In The Dictionary, lol.)

I will check out the leads posted to see if I can rectify my dilemma. Thanks guys.

What am I supposed to do with the wizard. I’ve tried all kinds of things, and it still won’t let me in. My user name is rejected. :frowning:

ps. I’m using Outlook Express.

Me too…
Close Outlook Express, run Mail Wizard and choose “Automatically protect all my accounts” and the option “Automatically protect all accounts that I create in the future”…
Hey, could you receive emails in Outlook Express? Do you use a proxy (if you don´t know you does not use one…)?
See http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=538;start=0 for more informations…

Good luck…

I closed Outlook Express. I then ran the Mail Wizard and chose “Automatically protect all my accounts” and the option “Automatically protect all accounts that I create in the future”. I went back to log on to Outlook Express and it still won’t let me in. It says my user name was rejected.

I could receive email on Outlook Express until I downloaded Avast.

Now I can send mail but not receive.

I don’t use a proxy (I don’t think). I’m not sure I know what this means. But I did not set up this computer - my ex did.

I tried the link you posted but it didn’t work. What am I doing wrong??

I´m on line right now like you. Try to do this:

  1. Remove avast protection from the emails (2nd option from Mail Wizard)
  2. Start Outlook Express. Could you receive emails?
  3. If yes, close Outlook
  4. Run Mail Protection Wizard again choosing the 1st option (with the checkbox “Automatically protect… in the future”.

I use Outlook Express and MailWasher too, this operation works to me…

Well, Well, Well …

I removed Avast protection from email and - I am STILL not able to pick up email !!! Hmmmmm.

My computer did some pretty funky things shortly after me and my “ex” separated. Then about twenty-four hours before I happened to notice him online, we both have MSN, I “suddenly” couldn’t access my email, come to think of it. ::slight_smile: At that time I had to call my internet provider’s helpline to see what was wrong. I’m not sure what they did but it helped. And at that time I changed my password also.

Could it be my “ex” has been mucking around with my settings from another computer?

Or do I have some sort of virus changing my settings?

Looks like I’ll be calling the ISP Helpline again tomorrow.

Looks like I decided to get virus protection and a firewall at a very good time.

Nikita,

It seems that you have problems not related to Avast.
It can also be possible that your “ex” installed a remote control program that could allow him access to our computer without your consent.
For now, do not leave your computer powered up when not in use, and certainly keep it offline unless you are there to monitor what it does.

If your ISP corrects the problem with Outlook Express, then keep an eye out for changes in the password.
This would indicate what is called a logging program which tracks your keystrokes and can send a email report to another computer.

I know this seems confusing to you , but these are things you need to understand and learn if you want to stay in computer land. hahahaha

Best thing now is to have your ISP get your mail working again, then find someone you know who can help you determine if any “logging programs” have been installed on your computer.

I hope this is not the case, but when strange thing happen, then you look for strange answers.

Good luck.

I called my Internet Service Provider’s Helpline and it was determined my server name fields were not what they are supposed to be. They walked me through the settings and now it works! A similar thing happened a few weeks ago. And prior to that “something” erased my email’s “inbox” contents, a few times. When my bottom left-hand systems tray disappeared I determined to “fix” my computer. I now have a good anti-virus scanner installed (avast!) and a firewall (ZoneAlarm). Thanks for all the help - and patience!

How do I find out about “logging programs”? :-[

Nikita,

Glad that all turned out ok…for now. Keep an eye on your computer for any suspicious changes.

As for Logging programs…simple. They are small programs embedded in your system to record keystrokes…ALL OF THEM. So these programs record website urls, passwords, credit card numbers, email, personal information…eveything you type in to the keyboard. Some “keyloggers” ,as the are called, can email a report to an outside computer for which the email address was entered when the program was installed. (SC Keylogger is such a program which you can download from CNET)

You can easily research such programs by doing a web search for “keyloggers” or “computer logging programs”. The 'hows" and “whys” of their inner working are too confusing for me to explain.
Just be aware that they exist.

You may want to try this ANTI-keylogger evaluation program .http://www.anti-keyloggers.com/download.html.
I have not tried it myself, since I would know if I am monitoring myslef… ;D ;D

Their useful purpose is to monitor children’s activity, or other users activity on the same computer to prevent abuse or unauthorized usage.

This board is a wonderful place to learn about Avast and anti-virus software. The users and the Alwil team are great.

If I can be of further assistance, post on the board, or use the IM feature.

Get to know us! Welcome.

;D

That’s presicely the type of information I needed to get me started. Thanks techie101.

ps. I’ll be around here from now on. Not always pestering for answers to weird questions though (I hope).

I´m glad you get it
Just to know: to scan e-mails avast! change the Internet providers (POP and SMTP) of your e-mail client to 127.0.0.1
This is normal, not a abuse neither the program is “collecting” information about you. The steps I posted last time just “return” the values to the default and to the avast configuration (127.0.0.1) ;D
