Can't Logon to Windows XP -- user icons gone

My logon icons have completely disappeared when XP boots, and if I finally do get in using CTRL-ALT-DEL 2 times, I am only granted ‘guest privileges’. I can’t access most of my files because I am no longer an Administrator; I can’t get administrator privileges anymore.

Does this sound like a virus attack because Avast’s free virus & worm removal tool can’t find anything, nor does a deep scan with Home Edition 4.6.763 (0612-0 update) ? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi,

It certainly does sound like an attack from some sort of virus or malware. It may be new so not yet known. Or avast! may not have it in its signatures yet. But for a free scan and cleaning. Click on the link below.

Probably you can’t install anything more but it will be good to run a-squared and ewido. Maybe you can put this HDD as a ‘slave drive’ of another computer and try to clean it.
I will recommend a full scandisk (chkdsk) because could be a disk access problem.
