I receive this error when trying to manually update: The license key for this product is invalid or expired.
License is valid until: Wednesday, December 31, 1969
Current date: Wednesday, September 12, 2007
I’ve had no problems until a few days ago. When I look at About avast!.. it says Expiration: Thursday, January 12, 2012 1:59:55 PM and Updates expiration: never.

Which is your avast version: Professional, Home or Trial.
Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Alex, with all respect, where did you get such a key? (that shows “Expiration: Thursday, January 12, 2012 1:59:55 PM and Updates expiration: never.”

I very much doubt the key was obtained from us (we don’t issue such keys AFAIK).

Thanks
Vlk

What version do you have Home or Pro ?

  1. The license key takes its date from when it was issued (generated) and sent to you, so 1969 is very strange.

  2. Updates expiration most certainly has an expiry date even on the Home version, mine is 01 Nov 2008.

  3. The Home version update/license period is normally 14 month and the Pro version, periods of 12 months. Neither of which fit in with the “Expiration: Thursday, January 12, 2012 1:59:55 PM” over 4 years away and I don’t know if they are that specific as to include a time in the expiration. As far as I’m aware the maximum period for a pro license that you can purchase is three years.
