Since the last update to Avast 4 Home version 4.8.1229, I have been unable to open the Log Viewer. I restarted my computer and it did not solve the problem so I did a completed shut down and restarted the computer with no success. Everything else appears to work fine. I ran Avast scan to check for viruses but it came up clean. I have WinXP. I have a feeling the update did not install clean and I will probably need to uninstall and reinstall Avast 4 Home unless there is a repair utility or something easier to make the fix. Has anyone experienced this problem and know the best way I can correct the problem? Thanks.

Thanks! I’ll give it a try.
I tried to repair the program thru the add/remove in the Control Panel w/o success. Since I did not want to go thru the hassle of uninstalling and reinstalling Avast, I decided to try a System Restore. I restored my system back to a prior restore point, before the Avast update, when I knew everything was working good. Using System Restore seemed to solve the problem. I can now open the Log Viewer and it appears to be with the new version of Avast. The only other update I made that day was MacFee SiteAdvisor update. I use MacFee SiteAdvisor as an add-on to my IE browser and overall like it. I decided to block the latest update of MacFee SiteAdvisor, for now, to see how things go. I have updated both programs before with no conflicts or problems. Strange! I will have to keep an eye on things for a while to see if this truly solved the problem. Keep the comments or suggestions coming if you have any. Thanks.
Whilst going back seems to have resolved your problem, it doesn’t pinpoint what is responsible. If it were truly the last avast update then this forum would be buzzing with topics about it and that clearly isn’t the case.
So hopefully it looks like a one off glitch on your update, fingers crossed now it is sorted it will stay that way.
I use MacFee SiteAdvisor as an add-on to my IE browser and overall like it. II have the latest SiteAdvisor installed and the latest avast! 4.8.1229 installed and when I right click on avast!'s blue ball to look at the Log Viewer it just blinks then a blue bar appears on the screen with avast! Log Viewer in it and I have to use Desktop Refresh to get rid of it.
This is on my XP Pro system.
Well I use the siteadvisor odd-on with firefox, but I can’t see how a browser add-on would have any impact on what is a non-internet, browser independent application, e.g. avast’s Log Viewer.
I have no problem with the display or closing of the Log Viewer also with XP Pro SP3.
Well so far everything is back to normal since I did a system restore. I know I should take the time to figure the problem out but I needed to get my system back asap. I appreciate the feed back. Before I did a system restore I tried the desktop refresh but it would not get rid of the blue menu line. It may have been a windows glitch with my system. Avast has always performed great on my system with no problems. The SiteAdvisor update was the last update after the Avast update. It just seems funny that after I did these updates that I had the problem.
A workaround is described here:
