Can't open sites

I have used avast for several years on our desktop computers with absolutely no problems. Now we have a laptop and Avast is giving us fits. In order to go to my facebook, hotmail, yahoo etc I have to turn Avast off. I clicked on and registered for the http://support.avast.com for tech support and after registering it just loads a blank page even when I try to get it on my desktop that has never given me AVAST problems. When I am able to get to the sign in I sign in and again… it gives a blank page. I’m to my wits end and ready to dump Avast and go with something else if I can’t get some assistance. We’ve tried multiple things to make it work, but the most effective has been to turn the Avast off to get to our stuff online. Even my kids have to turn it off to get information for school from places like wikapedia because you click on it and it just sits there and sits there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, it could be that your personal firewall is blocking the WebShield process that is used to scan downloads. Do you have any Firewall application installed? Is the process ashWebSv.exe listed there as allowed?

What brand of computer are you running (dell,HP,ect…). I ask because we’ve seen many problems with acer machines

If you have XP, vista32bit or Win2k, you could enable a boot time scan. Right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, a memory scan will take place followed by the opening of the Simple User Interface, Menu, ‘Schedule boot-time scan…’ Or see http://www.digitalred.com/avast-boot-time.php.

I would also suggest using some other tools just to be on the safe side.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).
