I’m using v7 of Avast on my system (I don’t want to move to v8+ at present) and I’ve just reached the 30 day period in which I have to re-register for another years worth of free use.
I have clicked on the register now button and a small box come up saying it’s retrieving information and then flicks off and nothing happens. I’m on a dial up connection.
So I go and get a free licence key via email from the Avast website, but now seem to have nowhere to insert this key.
Can anyone please help me with this as I’m completely stumped!
The thirty day period you referred to is for a trial period of a paid version/product.
I cannot understand why you wish to stay with an outdated version (v7.0).
v2014 is lighter, quicker and has the latest technologies and provides better protection.
That said…
You have to wait for the Maintenance > Update section to change to allow for the manual input of the key you were sent. I think that happens at 28 days, so wait a couple of days.
The longer you hold on to avast 7 the less you are likely to get in the way of support as people quickly lose familiarity with older versions.
I have no idea why you don’t want to go to avast 8.0 ?
That was a very stable version at the time that avast 2014 (9.0.x) was released. The problem being you can’t get that build from avast, you would have to get it from somewhere like filehippo and download the last version of 8.0 from its mirror site.
Para-Noid, are you saying that I can’t register my free version offline every year? If so, that’s a pain in the bum I thought I’d be alright to register through the 'register now’s button, but obviously not!
DavidR, do you mean the Registration section will change again at 28 days and not the Update section?
I understand where you’re both coming from with regards to holding on to older versions. I could go and get v8 (2014 seems a bit buggy for some at present I see) but I may well be forced into getting a new system at some point next year anyway where I’d have to go out and set everything up again, due to Microsoft ending automatic updates to XP systems, so for the time being, I thought I’d stick with what I know works. I’m going to try and get as much use out of this system as possible as I really can’t afford a change but I guess I’ll have to, if something does go wrong!
I do remember you were both helpful last year when I first posted here with concerns so thanks again!
I’m having the same problem as I have a machine on Win2000Pro and the newer versions will not work. I tried v8 as they suggested when 2014 announced that it can’t run on 2000 but it will not run; I uninstalled and went for 6 - the last to work properly - and I simply can’t register. I got me an email key, but…
I don’t use it on line very often, but I do need to occasionally, for a few minutes.
v2014 buggy? Not really! The issues you see are from an extremely, minute number of users.
The vast, huge majority of users “without” issues rarely post. With 200.000.000 users receiving
vps updates means that very, very few users are having issues. I’ve been using v2014 from beta
to final release and even the betas had very few “real” issues. If you give v2014 a go and have problems
we will more than likely be able to help you. I have my doubts you will encounter any problems.
LOL! Easily done. As I say, I can see where you’re coming from with other users becoming unfamiliar with older versions. I’ll wait for a few days and see if the registration section changes again to allow me to paste the key in. If it doesn’t, I’m not really sure what I’ll do… I’ll have to make my mind up eventually!
If it doesn’t change, which I doubt should be an issue, but if it is then you are down to a clean install of the version you have chosen to install.
Avast 8.0 latest version from filehippo saved so you can use it after the the cleanup as outlined in Para-Noid’s Reply #1.
Note that you should only need to run the uninstall utility once with the latest version of it.
Back again. The registration page changed at 29 days and had an offline section for me to enter in the key I’d received by email. Now registered for 380 days. Should’ve just waited in the first place and not panicked but didn’t quite know what was going on as I’ve never had to re-register before as I only went out and got Avast last December, but hey, least I know for future reference. Thanks all!
