Is anyone else having problems accessing avast.com? I need to re-register because my registration has expired and I can not access the web site to do so. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

What happens when you try to connect to avast.com, what error messages, etc. ?

HOSTS file redirect - 127.0.0.1 check your HOSTS file using notepad or a text editor of your choice, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or do a search for HOSTS to find it if not there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

It may be that there is an entry for avast.com placed there by malware trying to stop you getting to anti-virus web sites. Is there an entry for avast.com in the hosts file ?
If so please post the contents (copy and paste) of the file here.

Delete all of those lines for avast.

Either of these two would block access and would attempt to redirect you to the IP address at the start of the line.

Are there any other entries in the hosts file for other antivirus sites besides avast, like kaspersky, symantec, mcafee, etc.

yes, but this is silly. i have never had any problems before going to the website. this is just weird. and this is the only web site that i am having problems with.

It isn’t weird, something is trying to block access to the site and has modified the hosts file to redirect you somewhere else. That is the purpose of the hosts file, but it is usually used to avoid malicious sites and not as has been done here, malware modifying the hosts file to stop access to AV sites.

Whilst this may be more targeted as it usually targets many different AV sites and may be able to detect what AV you have installed and block that.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode, SUPERantispyware

It may be useful to do an analysis of what is running on your system. Program & Tutorial - Also useful as a diagnostic tool - FileHippo Download - HiJackThis - HJT Information HiJackThis Tutorial.

Download and run HJT and post the contents of the log file (cut and paste) into this topic, you may need to split it over two or more posts depending on how large it is.
