Can't re-start Avast...help please.

Hi guys,

A few days ago I managed to get the ‘Internet Security Essentials’ virus and after a few questions here and there I downloaded ‘Malewarebytes’ and it cleaned out the virus, but after re booting I couldn’t open Internet Explorer?
Much swearing followed…LOL

I finally did a System Restore’…and hey presto all seemed fine until…

Uopon re-starting my Avast program politely told me ‘Thank you for installing Avast’…huh?

And when i tried to start it…nothing! The program would not start!

I then thought it must need the license file? But no…it wouldn’t accept the old one?
So I headed to Avast webpage and requested they re-send me one…which they did.
I saved it as requested…but when I try to insert it it tells me it isn’t a
valid Avast License File’!!!
More swearing ensured…

As I really need to use the Net today I decided to try to download the Free version temporarily…but don’t you just know what happened…when I try to open the setup it tells me I don’t have enough user rights???
Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong?
Is it possible that the license file Avast sent me was corrupted…and what else could be wrong?

Many thanks,

There can be unexpected consequences in using system restore so it might well be best to do a clean reinstall of avast:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1000 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe (English only) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

You have to be running an administrator account to install avast so I don’t know if that was the problem that you had with permissions.

Thanks David…I followed your instructions and uninstalled/re-installed in safe mode but when I try to install the new new version again it keeps saying I don’t have enough user rights.
Now as I am the ONLY administrator on this computer I can’t understand what it means?
Any ideas?

Thanks…

I really can’t get my head round this not having enough user rights as I think this is more of an OS thing that an avast one.

What is your OS ?
If Vista or Win7, try right clicking on the avast installation file and choose Run as Administrator and see if that makes any difference.

I’m running XP David.
Just tried the ‘RUN AS’ and got nowhere again?

I see a few people over the years on this forum have had the same problem but no answer given yet?

I’m not sure what to do next as I am feeling very vulnerable with no security at all!

OK, did you follow the instruction in full in the order given ?

In your reply you said you did the uninstall/reinstall from safe mode, nothing mentioned about uninstall in normal mode, boot into safe mode and run the avast uninstall utility, reboot and install in normal mode.

The steps in my first post have to be done in the order stated.

I think the fact that the ones you found going back years show how infrequent this is. The lack of an answer is we simply don’t know why it is happening, hence my comment about I can’t get my head round this not having enough user rights. It simply isn’t something that I’m familiar with and never having used Vista doesn’t help.

What other security software do you have installed, firewall, anti-spyware, etc. ?

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Hi David,

I followed your instructions to the letter and in order…and as I could not uninstall from Add/Remove programs in normal mode, I downloaded the Uninstall Utility and saved it and then started from point 2 after rebooting as you suggested below. Although I could not follow through with the last step "Install & reboot’ as it still would not let me install!

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).
•1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
•2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
•3. install the latest version, reboot.

I have Spybot installed but not running, and no other security software other than the built in firewall from Windows.

I paid for one years worth of security in October and if I can’t fix this it looks like I may have to look elsewhere…shame as I like Avast a lot.
:frowning:

I honestly don’t know what is going on here, which is why I asked the supplementary questions. I have been using XP Pro for probably 8 years and I have never come across this “not having enough user rights” for installing avast (and I have had avast for almost 7 years) or any other application for that matter.

I would uninstall spybot as there have been a number of reports of conflict recently. Whilst you say it isn’t running I believe it there may well be a service running.

Do you still have your old previous version of avast 5.1.xxxx, etc. if that worked you could try installing that.

I’m just wondering if there might be something else going on in your system actually blocking the avast installation.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).

Don’t worry about reported tracking cookies they are a minor issue and not one of security, allow SAS to deal with them though. - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie.
Also available, a portable version of SAS, http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html, no installation required.

In trying to install those it may well give an idea if they are blocked.

Unfortunately I’m going to bed now, 4.20am here in the UK. Hopefully someone can follow up on the MBAM ans SAS logs you attach on your next post…
