Can't read or write to my External Hard drive

Hi, I’m unable to copy files to / from my external hard drive (same for a flash drive) - I’m getting a “…need permissions to perform this action…” error message. I’m running Windows 7 SP1.

I tried disabling the firewall thru the Avast user interface, but that didn’t fix the problem - nor did disabling the port scan detection option in the Firewall advanced settings (per another post I found). I even totally disabled all Avast shields, but still no go.

Any other Avast settings I should try changing? Are there any services that Avast might have stopped / disabled that might be causing the issue? Very frustrating to say the least…

Thanks in advance!

Pete

What makes you think it has anything to do with Avast???
The message you’re receiving is from Windows.

Uninstall Avast and try, if you still cant do it then Avast is not to blame. I have a feeling it has something to do with Windows and file permissions rather than Avast.

If you can see the drive in Windows Explorer, but cannot copy/paste due to permissions errors might want to try installing: http://www.mcshield.net/ May fix your issue if caused by malware.

This has been resolved. It was not an issue with Avast, but with a data encryption setting on my laptop.

Thanks for the update and clarification. Glad you solved the problem.
