Can't RECEIVE email since installing v.4.8

Since I installed Avast v. 4.8 I can no longer RECEIVE email w/o disabling Avast. I can SEND email. XP Pro. VPS 080628-0 6-28-08. Pentium 4 2.66 GHz 512 MB RAM. Connect via Comcast Cable. Email client is Outlook Express.

My FW is McAfee Personal FW v.8.2. I don’t know if it allows ashMaiSv.exe (Obviously don 't know how to determine this). I have not made any alterations to the Internet Mail provider. When I try to retrieve email, I get the following error msg: “The server responded with an error. Account: ‘mail.adelphia.net’, Server: ‘mail.comcast.net’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded(pass:20, processes:emproxy.exe[19], msimn.exe[1]), there is a collision with another program’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90”

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and check for email, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Does Comcast use SSL (secure encrypted) email ?

Have you made any changes to the default Internet Mail provider ?
If so what ?

This is your problem, emproxy.exe (there is a collision with another program), it is taking up all the concurrent connections so avast can’t download the email.

It is part of McAfee so you have two applications checking your email.

emproxy.exe is a process associated with McAfee Email Proxy from McAfee, Inc.. This process should not be removed to ensure that your system is secure.

Do you have McAfee security suite (or some such) that includes anti-virus or email checking ?
If so you need to uninstall any AV element of McAfee as they will clash.

Thanks very much for your assistance. I appreciate it.

No problem, glad I could help.
