Can't select a server...

Hi -

I have been having a problem updating iAVS. I have had Avast try on it’s own, and I have tried manually and it still doesn’t work.

Here is what the “avast! Antivirus Setup” pop-up says:

"Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Can’t select any server for downloading (from 0).

Total time: 1 s"

For the last 2 days this is the error that I am getting. It will not update iAVS. I have been using Avast for about 1½ years and have never had this problem. Is there a problem at Avast’s end? Or is there something wrong at my end? ???

Running Windows XP :stuck_out_tongue:
dial-up connection :stuck_out_tongue:
Zone Alarm firewall.

Thanks for any assistantance!

The servers.def file would appear to be corrupt or 0KB, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def .
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the original.

Ok, I have the new .def file. Do I rename it to servers.def.vpu as the current one is named? Thanks!

No servers.def.vpu is not the name of the file you downloaded servers.def and it shouldn’t be renamed, just copy and paste it into the original folder windows should ask if you want to replace the original file. You probably don’t have the hide extensions for known file types unticked and also show hidden files and folders, see image.

Thanks!

hmmm… all of the files in the c:.…avast4/setup file have the .vpu extension on them. (btw - computer literate  )

Thanks for the help!

See the image there are 3 servers related files, servers.def, servers.def.lkg (last known good) and servers.def.vpu. Drop the downloaded servers.def file into the setup folder and it should be done ?

Not trying to insult your inteligence ;D , just covering the bases as it often saves time in the long run.
