My friend has just installed Avast, and cant download or upload images via email. The error is that the server keeps timing out after 60 secs.
Is that an avast problem?

putty, follow bob`s advice. Maybe you have to adjust the timeouts 
Do you have a firewall? Which is your email program and your OS?

If you experiencing that problem trying to send small, normal phisical size pictures, that server time out set to 60 seconds shouldn’t be problem at all. Go into INTERNET MAIL PROVIDER in avast! ON-ACCESS SCANNER, HEURISTICS and set SENSITIVITY to MEDIUM… that helped me with same problem months and months ago…
