Can't send or receive e-mail using Avast with both Thunderbird and Outlook Expre

I keep getting the message with Avast AV for email activated
“The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server Failed…”
Please verify SMTP Server setting is correct…Please verify that mail/news account settings are correct." An error occurred with the POP3 mail server… " etc.
I have searched but the explanation of what to do isn’t detailed enough for me.
How do I check my settings? I am really ignorant. This was happening with Norton AV also, so I uninstalled it and installed Avast on my desktop.
Avast works great on my laptop. Both have Windows XP SP 2 Home edition

I tried adding the avast program to Windows Firewall Exclusions. That didn’t change things. I turned Windows Firewall off and they still didn’t work. I have to disable Internet Mail to get incoming and outgoing emails.

I got this message when trying to download email from Outlook Express.

The server responded with an error. Account: ‘lincoln.midcoast.com’, Server: ‘lincoln.midcoast.com’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded (processes:VentC.exe[20])’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

It does mention Avast.

Could this be where the problem is?

You can open avast4.ini file and increase (or add) the value MaxConnections into MailScanner section.
Please click ‘Settings’ in my signature and browse for the section MailScanner.
What is the program VentC.exe ? Is it a spam killer?

Did you use a legit copy of NAV and just give up? ::slight_smile:

Did you correctly uninstall NAV?

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool (browse their site to get it, there are one for each antivirus series). Boot.
  3. Install avast! Boot.
  4. See what you get.

Ok I added MaxConnections to avast4.ini. That didn’t help.
I have a legit copy of Norton System Works. In fact I just renewed the subscription which is one of the reasons that I switched to Avast.
I did 1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
Symantec says only to use the removal tool if the uninstall has failed. Which it did not.
I looked for the program file VentC.exe, and found it was the Venturi Client for speeding up my connection. That also was sent by my ISP for a trail period. Now I will go and uninstall that Let us see if that solves the problem. It just happens that I don’t have that particular program on my laptop and that has no problem with getting and sending mail.

;D ;D ;D ;D
I uninstalled Venturi and that did it. Now my email works correctly. Thanks for noticing the Venturi program. I didn’t even see it in the error message.

I just love this forum!!!

Ok, but it does not harm if you run even if Control Panel works.
In your case, seems ok. Nothing to do.

We too 8)
