I disabled the Avast Self Defence Module and was told i should then be able to stop avastUI.exe in task manager but it still says ‘Accesss Denied’.
So how do i terminate it? I need to stop this process to troubleshoot another problem.

Was avast! service running when you were disabling the self-defense?
I had disabled the shields and firewall using the icon, but AvastIE.exe was running.
Well since the avastUI.exe isn’t a Shield then I would expect it to be disabled. That is how you access the User Interface and how you would enable the shields once you have completed what it is that you want to disable the shields for.
You would have to disable the self-defence module to be able to stop the avastUI.exe in the windows task manager, of course you would have needed to have the avastUI.exe tray icon running to do this.
Enabling the tray icon let me stop AvastUI.exe, a shame it doesn’t even know how to turn itself back on.
The tray icon is an integral part of the avastUI.exe (user interface) stop avastUI.exe and no tray icon to access the UI to restart shields, etc. etc.
If you stop the avastUI.exe you have to restart it manually, since you have also stopped shields, etc. you are going to have to restart avast (desktop icon or start programs, all programs, avast! antivirus.
