Cant start up. Hangs at aswrvrt.sys

Hi,

My laptop is not starting up. I cant even start up in safe mode. It hangs at aswrvrt.sys. I have windows 7 and i think 64 bit.

I’ve seen that others have had the same problem and were suggested to open a new threat.

Please help!

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

  1. Rufus

For 64bit systems
2. Windows 7 64bit RC I will pm the link for this
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Hi Essexboy,

Thank u for the quick reply.

Please bare with me im a total newbie. Im doing something wrong. The laptop is asking me to do something concerning a codepage [437]

What is it asking you to do … What language is your system in

I think its english but it could be dutch.

I cant read the whole thing because im using another screen thats in another format. (The laptop’s screen is busted.)

What I can read is "…ing US-English keyboard with US-English codepage [437]
"…>

I think that may be telling you the language in use, can you get past that ?

NO. if i hit enter it will just go to a new line. Should i write something?

To me this sounds like you may need to re-install the OS. What is your make and model of laptop ?

Gateway NV59C

Would i loose my data on the laptop?

Unfortunately yes. All data will be lost, if the recovery console had worked we could have saved something

This should reset your computer

The way to restore Gateways is to hold down the ALT Key and repeatedly hitting f10 then it should bring you to a boot sequence screen then choose the HDD and then hold down ALT and repeatedly hit f10 again that should prompt the restore feature for gateway

The reason im wanting to get back into this laptop is because my backup crashed! The only way to get back to family photo’s and such is through this laptop.

Any other way???

You can try to use one of the various boot CDs and see if the machine will come up on it and then copy things off.
Basically, burn CD on other computer…go into BIOS on boot of bad PC and set boot sequence to DVD/CD…put boot CD in bay, reboot…hopefully comes up, attach external USB HDD or stick and copy off files you need.
Boot sequence: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htm
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/change-the-boot-order-in-bios/
…but I think the ALT+F10 outlined also gives you boot sequence option.

You can even run A/V scan fron this…but I’d first get all your data off.

Scroll down to this section in the following thread :

If you cannot Boot the computer

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

This will create a windows PE environment and you may be able to back up data from there

Whenever I see some of the undoubtedly helpful ‘solutions’ being offered or suggested here my heart sinks. The reason being the assumption that everyone has another computer to be able to either get back onto this forum and or download the software which may help sort out the mess Avast may have caused. What about all those people who don’t have this option? What are they going through trying sort these sorts of boot stall problems?

Perhaps when listing the system requirements Avast (and not them only I hasten to add) should include the necessity for a compatible backup computer in case things go wrong as well.

It is something I’ve long been suggesting on forums where people ask for advice buying their first PC of some sort, lists their requirements and budget. IT experts and others replying always go for a choice of machine that makes the most of that budget recommending the best value for money CPUs, best performing GPUs, HDDs, SSDs brands etc.

Rarely do they think of suggesting that the best advice for the first time buyer is actually to split their budget and buy two computers. That way when something goes wrong, and it will eventually, they have the ability to get on back online and get free help in forums like this.

The cheapest option of all is a small USB Hard drive and a free imaging programme.

Cluster… not sure I follow. ???

As FYI, when you see a driver posted as the “stick” point the issue is not necessarily that driver/software. MOST times it is the driver AFTER…since the O/S posts the last successful driver loaded. There are times that Avast’s driver has caused issues but I’d say the high percentage of times it is not an Avast issue…proof to that is many times Essexboy can remove Avast install thru FRST and user still has problems. I can say that the folks that help out here go WAY beyond the Avast issues to help people recover.

To your point about a 2nd PC…well, you can apply that to a car or anything else in life.
If you car breaks down you need to either borrow a friends, call a cab, rent a car or have it towed to shop.
A PC is not different…the user can “use a friend’s” PC to burn CD or bring the problematic PC to professional shop.
In the case of this thread’s OP if they brought PC to shop perhaps they can recover from issue but at bare min pull the HDD and copy off the user’s data for them before installing O/S. The suggestions here are for the folks who want to try to recover on their own…not having the PC in front of us limits how much suggestion we can provide and also I think everyone helping is very careful to not put the person in worse state. Also, there is no requirement for a 2nd PC if people would just use solid backup techniques (e.g. $50 USB HDD + Free Backup Software) to recover when something does happen…flying without a parachute has its risks.

Well i had a military grade blah blah drop proof external drive and it crashed on first drop. I usualy triple save important stuff. This time i just waited too long.

It’s doing something. Will let you know later…

See this http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-drive-cloning-software.htm

Ran it twice. Same result.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage.

Blah blah

Technical info:

  • Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF78DA528, and more numbers)"

Guess im running out of options? Should i have the RFST stick in when starting up? Took it out because the laptop was running the stick (and hanging on that 437 thing) instead of the cd though i changed the order.

Do you have a Windows 7 Repair disk or the O/S Disk by chance ?

I assume you have access to another PC since you did the Rufus+RC+FarBar USB ?
If so, any chance this other PC is also W7 64bit PC ? If so: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/create-a-system-repair-disc
You want to get to the Command Prompt using the repair disk (Recovery Console)
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-use-a-system-repair-disc-to-restore-windows.html
…and with the Farbar USB stick inserted be able to run FRST64 as Essexboy has outlined at bottom of Reply #1.
“At the command prompt type the following:”

Also, as Essexboy outlined if you get this far and post the log I’d also go ahead and start copying off the data files you want.

Lastly, if this all goes bad and only a O/S install is needed then do not panic…you can get your data.
You have options…

  1. If you are not tech savy take the laptop to a PC shop and they will pull the HDD and put an adapter on it and copy off your data…or most likely use some type software like #2
  2. There are lots of recovery software out there but this is a very good FREE one that others on this Forum have used.

It “sounds” like it is just for photos but does much more: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/File_Formats_Recovered_By_PhotoRec
    Here is the How-To: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step
  3. Probably most easily to use one of the boot CDs above I listed in prior post.
PhotoRec is one of the util in the UBCD boot CD…under the Parted Magic option.
