Can't turn off translucent effects avast 4.8.1296 home, screen saver, no skins.

Hi good people.

I’m trying to turn off the translucent effects in avast home 4.8.1296
This is a first time problem for me with avast.

I can’t turn off translucent effects with avast 4.8.1296 home, screen saver, no skins.

Doesn’t make any difference either way, if there is a tick in the “translucent effects” tick box or not.
Always reverts to “translucent on”.

I’m using the simple interface, no skins.

I’ve never met this before.

Any ideas any one.

Cheers
Dean

Do you mean after booting the effect (check box) is marked?

Do you mean you’re using ashSimp2.exe (skinless interface)?

Which is your firewall?
And operational system?

Thanks for answering so quick Tech,

OS is Windows XP Pro SP3 fully updated, fresh install 5 days ago.
Using windows built in firewall, no fancy setup or blocking. Bog standard.

I installed avast using “minimal” selection - no skins, still running in demo mode.

After booting or rebooting, the translucent effects are on, no matter which way I select/tick the translucent box in skinless interface.

Be used to avast forum speed

Are you talking the translucent effects that you’ll have in Program Settings > Appearance tab of settings?
Maybe you need to follow the instructions here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=38171.msg319796#msg319796
Do you use McAfee Site Advisor?

Hi Tech

Be used to avast forum speed Wink
You will be waiting for me to test these things, sorry. :'(

Yes
Do you use McAfee Site Advisor?
No, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, MS XP firewall - settings normal. One and only avast for antivirus - always.

I have changed the BIOS settings for the on board graphics adapter first, testing now.

What is the

SunbeltKPFHack=2

hack for the avast .inf file do to the avast setup please?

Cheers Dean

Hi Tech,
Beat you to it this time

Not with an answer mind-you.
BIOS graphics settings change didn’t work.
Trying the

SunbeltKPFHack=2

under Common sub section of the .ini file.

Will get back with the results.

Thanks for your help.

Edit: No luck with SunbeltKPFHack=2, or my idea of giving the onboard video a bit more memory.
I’m trying to find where the transperant setting lives in the .ini file, and see what the setting is doing.
Any clues…?

Even though it’s certainly strange (that the checkbox state isn’t “remembered”), the translucent effects only apply to the skinned Simple UI - so if you are using the skinless one, the setting doesn’t do anything anyway (there are no effects there whatsoever).

It’s a graphical issue that avast has with some applications (not only Kerio Personal Firewall). It could help.

Hi Igor,
it’s what happens to the avast screensaver that is mucking me up.
The avast screensaver that floats around on the screen stays in transparent mode, is causing the machine not to go into sleep mode.

When I turn off “translucent effects” it fixed the same problem on an other machine, with exactly the same software setup on it, both Intel m/b’s. Single core CPU’s.

But on this machine I can’t turn off the eye candy. ??? ::slight_smile:

Never had this before.

Thinking now…

Cheers Dean

This setting has no effect on the screensaver.

Besides what igor said, avast does not prevent the computer to enter in sleep mode… strange uh? ???

Posted by: igor - This setting has no effect on the screensaver.
Quite right, where did I get that idea from, just checked on a couple of other machines. I must be going blind and silly.

I'm wrong, you guys right again ::)

Just been having some troubles with graphics on machines with the on board Intel graphics adapters/video drivers. Machines not going to sleep, but I think it’s been me snoozing.

The machine that is now working has a HP patch for such issues, but still not 100%.

Going to try MS’s WindowsXP-KB815304-x86 patch on this Intel box, suck it and see.
[Not that this hotfix is for XP SP3, but it covers the problem, not going to force it at this point]

The more I think about it, the OS and some other(s) flaky software are not getting on.

Never ever had troubles with avast myself, have been using it since v4.1

The only anti-virus to use if you ask me.

In fact avast is a bit like a virus itself,
every PC it goes near, ends up with it on for ever. ;D

Thanks for all your effort and troubles.

Cheers

Note; looking forward to avast v5 with in built Stunnel, for SSL email accounts.
avast just keeps getting stronger.
Thank you.
Going away now…

A lot of users are waiting to this

Tech,
I hate these kind of replies, but since copying an .ini file from the HP machine, on to the broken box, things are going better.
Going to leave them both over night, doing their screen saving sleeping thing and see how they go.

Will know if this is "remembered" tomorrow.
The checkbox state isn't "remembered".

Once again, thanks for your time.
Will post back/close the thread when I find out more in a couple of days.

Cheers Dean
