After installing Avast Internet Security on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and rebooting, it told me my system is not fully protected.
When I open Avast it shows the firewall is turned off and i can’t start the service or turn it on.
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.

I tried all these steps and still the firewall won’t turn on. I am running Avast Internet Security on XPpro x64.
I have an external adsl modem that has a built-in firewall - could this be the source of the problem? Or does that mean I am infected? I tried running Avast in safe mode to scan my computer, but it does not seem to run properly in safe mode…
Grateful for help!
Thanks
OK, thanks a lot for this. I ran a quick scan at log on, using your app. It ran nicely on my XP 64, but it did not find any threat.
So I am back at square one, namely, what is preventing Avast from turning the firewall on?
Thanks!
Francesco
An old avast installation and not properly uninstalled. Maybe searching for “aswNdis” references into C:\Windows\Inf\oem*.inf files. You can use Windows Search or FileSeek (http://www.binaryfortress.com/fileseek/) for that. Then you can move the files to another folder. Boot. Try installing again.
An old 3rd party firewall not properly uninstalled.
