Can't uninstall Avast

I installed Avast AV on my Windows 7 64-bit system. However, I have been strongly advised not to run more than 1 AV on my system. I would like to try with just MSE for a certain trial period. When I try to uninstall Avast, I get the window that says “Uninstallation progress” and it never goes away. It consumes 100% of one of my 4 processors. I did this from an administrator account. I also tried using elevated-privilege version of Windows Explorer. That is, from an elevated cmd shell, I entered “taskkill /f /im explorer.exe” followed by “explorer.exe”. The results are the same. I cannot find a description of this problem on google or google groups.

What could possibly cause this, and how can I fully and properly uninstall avast?

Thanks.

You’ll need to uninstall in safe mode. After you do, boot normally and run aswclear.exe, http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility to remove anything left behind, and run a cleaner utility after that, the one most recommended on this forum is Ccleaner.

See here for aswclear.exe download and proper uninstall procedure for using this utility.

Follow the instructions and you should be good to go.

Note that aswclear is to go only to your desktop.
