I am having a problem with Avast Home 4.8. Recently I was removing software using the Windows Programs and Features uninstaller. I was uninstalling Napster because I’ve never used it and didn’t want it on my computer. Or at least, I thought I was uninstalling Napster. I accidentally uninstalled Avast. For some reason I wasn’t thinking correctly it would seem. One of those moments when your just not paying attention and for the life of you, you can’t remember why you hit this or that button or what was said.
Anyway, I am trying to reinstall it, except I am getting an error. I am using Vista 64 and am also running the trial version of BitDefender which seems too much for my tastes. I was going to be uninstalling it and keeping Avast until this tiny mishap happen and I am reluctant to be virus scanner free until I got avast working again.
I double click the setup icon and it asks if I want to run this file, I hit Run. It shows a little box with an animation of two folders and files going from the left folder to the right. After a couple seconds it brings up the avast! Antivirus Setup and the only option is to Uninstall Current Version. I press next and a Microsoft Windows error box pops up and says
avast! Consent dialog helper application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
I hit close program and the Avast Setup screen says there was an error during product installation and the only button to push is Finish.
avast is not in my programs list to uninstall anymore.
When I try to run avast antivirus I get this error;
This application has failed to start because MSVCP71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
After I hit close on that a windows error box pops up and says;
Splash screen for Avast! has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
I have tried downloading the MSVCP71.dll from the internet and placing it in my System32 folder and it is still giving me these errors. I have tried putting the file in the avast folder and it refuses to creat it in the folder because I don’t have permission. My User Control settings is off which automatically runs everything as administrator I am assuming? I have tried manually deleting the Alwil Software folder and it denies the action because I don’t have permission.
Any help getting Avast working again would be great as I am planning on buying avast professional and it would really be bad if these errors popped up while trying to get avast professional working which I am assuming will.

Now were the two anti-viruses on at the same time. If soo, that is a problem. It`s usualy counter indicated to have two antivirus softwares on at the same time.
Make sure that BitDefender is completly removed and Follow Tech`s method.
Something weird happen when I got home and turned my pc on and tried something I have already tried several times that resulted in errors. When I tried to reinstall again several new options were present, including a repair option which seems to have fixed my problems. Should I have any other problems I will report back on what they are but everything seems fine right now : )
Thank you for your time!
Edit; Avast has also seemed to detected a false positive worm (hoping it’s a false positive) called Win32:Fujack-K [Wrm] in a BitDefender file called jpeg.xmd. It won’t let me do anything to it as it continuously denies permission. I will do do some research on this.
I have seen this issue before but not quite know what is causing it. the product is designed to delete the older update folder, when a new one is created, and only leave the last 2 ones. to manually solve the issue, you can delete all the 'av32bit_XXX' except the last 2 ones. but this is just a temporary fix as the updates will keep coming. also, you could try to upgrade for free to the 2009 version of the same product.
So this could be a similar issue and avast is detecting malware samples from an update, though I have to say this is disappointing on the part of bitdefender as I would have though its signature samples would be encrypted or otherwise protected (password, etc.).
I went to F-Secure.com to scan my PC using IE8. While the files the scanner were downloading to the Local Settings\Temp folder were 93% complete…Avast! alerted me of a 61860 byte file. The file name was jpeg.xmd. Avast! flagged it as containing signs of an HTML:IFrame-inf.
Since I was not sure if it was a false positive or if F-Secures servers were hacked to serve malware. I immediatly halted the downloading process at 93% confused if the actual files were actual malware signatures or that like Spybot S&D sometimes malware signatures turn up false positives.
Feeling as paranoid as I was, I promptly erased the subdirectories and files under the Local Settings\Temp folder.The name of the folders under Temp folder are Online Scanner\updates\0\infopack_fswserver.f-secure.com_80_377428708.
I erased the files by deleting them to the recycle bin and ran CCleaner with the 3passes algorithim
In this folder was were Avast! found the file “infopack_fswserver.f-secure.com_80_377428708”.
Anyone know if this is a false positive or that the file is indeed malicious?
An issue I would like to report, (I sincerly apoligize for including it in this topic since I am new to posting) is that Avast! hangs at a folder:
C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.RtcDll_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.2.3_x-ww_d6bd8b95. This was since 2 Months ago or so. I think it only happens when performing a thorough scan.I perform the Thorough scan just incase there a packed and obfuscated viruses on disc.
