I just download avast after avg’s latest download (huge) was giving me and a lot of others fits. It wouldn’t successfully download every time I tried it. Couldn’t get any good tech help from them. Oh well.
I keep getting a message from avast about not being able to download latest update. I don’t know why.
Also, when I connect to outlook express (dial up) to check/send e-mails I get a TCP/IP error message. I close the box, click send and receive and get the message again. I have to do this several times before I get e-mails downloaded.
I believe I did uninstall all of avg (had to do it manually because their uninstall wouldn’t work. I may have done more than that, though. Now when I start up a I get a message about a missing device concerning the AVG program and have to hit my space band three times to get to windows.
I just got a message from avast about my download being complete so I guess that’s ok, but still my e-mail problem with the TCP/IP error is a hassle
Ensure that it allows ashUpdSv.exe and avast.setup access to the internet (they are the processes for updating). Check and see if this is allowed access or is excluded by your firewall. If you see any entry/mention of it you could delete the entry and then initiate a manual update, your firewall should ask if they have permission to access the internet, answer yes.
Can you give us the exact error message, copy and paste from message window or try a screen capture.
Still getting sporadic e-mail connections. Sometimes it bypasses the error and I get e-mails, sometimes I get error message and have to click send/receive several times for e-mails to download.
Here is the exact error message I get:
A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server. Account: ‘pop.mcttelecom.com’, Server ‘127.0.0.1’, Protocol, POP3, Port 110, Secure(SSL) No error number, 0X800CCC15.
Does that ring bells with anyone?
Very weird that sometimes I get error message, sometimes I can get my e-mails as usual.
Doesn’t this is displayed in Symantec website?
Generally the firewalls have a tab settings for programs, applications, etc.
But, generally, if you start a program (in this case the avast Mail scanner) it should ‘ask’ you for connection.
On dial-up you should use greater values (maximum, 5 minutes). On permanent connections, 2 minutes should be more than enough to receive even attached files (not that big of course 8)).
I’m back again. I uninstalled AVAST and then had no problems getting my e-mails. I re-installed AVAST and have the same problem with e-mails as stated in my original post. Is it NORTON’s Firewall causing the problem? I increased my time-out to 3.5 minutes and e-mail problem persisted.
Should I uninstall NORTON and get another Firewall. If I do what is a good FREE firewall. Or should I continue to try to fix what I already have?
I am not getting any message about granting ashMailSV when I acess the internet. How do I go about doing that?
Quite possibly because you at some time had the pop-up authorisation appear and you probably denied access for ashMaiSv.exe, so it won’t ask again, just deny access.
You are going to have to look at the NIS help file about authorising/denying access for applications. Ther has to be an Applications/Programs section where all applications/programs either granted or denied access are listed and where additions/modifications/deletions are actioned.
Did you increase the timeouts in OE as I suggested, if so, increase it further. You could also increase the timeout in Internet Mail (but I not sure if this is the problem).
I doubt that the increased spam from xxx orientated sites is down to avast, it would appear that your email address has in some way been added to a spam list.
One of my email addresses gets allmost 98% spam, but I can’t simply ditch it so I use a very good anti-spam tool MailWasher Pro. It can monitor my email and delete the spam from the email server so it doesn’t even get into my inbox. There is a free version but that only covers one email account/address, that may be sufficient for your needs. You also don’t have to do anything to get it working with avast.
I ran A-SQUARED Hijack Free. It detected no malware, but more than 11 TROJANS, including NERTE, MASTERLOCK, STARTER WORM, AUTOTROJ-C, FLOOD.AV, BIG FOOT, BIOSYS.MACRO, etc.
I then ran a scan with AVAST and got “no infections” found.
I am having trouble with downloads, internet use, emails, slow action, lock-ups, and have to access the WWW with my dial-up connection rather than the regular way. I posted a similar response on a new thread.
