Can't update - Avast 5.0.677

Hi,

I am new to this forum. Can somebody please help me? I can’t update Avast 5.0.677. ???

Current version: 101006-2
Release date: 7/10/2010
Number of definitions: 2,072,688
Your virus definition is out of date. Latest virus definition: 101008-1

I tried to update it but I got the message that the Package is broken.

I read an other post about changing the Proxy settings from “Auto detect (use IE settings)” to “Direct connection (no proxy)” but it didn’t help. After I changed the setting and tried to update it I got the message “The system cannot find the file specified”.

Thank you!

Ps. I am using Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2

try this

http://www.avast.com/en-ca/download-update

manually download the update and patch it and see what happens

Have you rebooted after install if it is fresh install, you can try a repair though add remove program’s, if that doesn’t work we will require a bit more imformation about your system as to previous av’s and firewall’s that were or are still on your machine.

if nothing happens try uninstaling it and clean the registry with ccleaner
after that install it again and see what happens . sometimes it just happens
good luck

A lot of this going around. I’m interested to find out what exactly is happening with this persistent problem…

I chose to install Avast on my machine 2 days ago and had the same problem, it can’t manually updated. But it was fixed after I registered the program and reboot.

Yes, you definitely need to do this…and reboot after installation.

@ hennypenny,

Please try the following in this order:

  1. Avast Repair:
  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.
  1. Check your firewall: Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access?
  • If it does, delete the entry for it and reconnect to the Internet. This should force the firewall to ask permission again.
  1. Please check the following to check the settings:
Open Avast GUI > Settings > Updates >

A. Engine and Virus Definitions:

  • Automatic Update (default)
  • For “Manual” or “Ask When Update Available ” > Settings > Status Bar > Uncheck the last box

B. Update Parameters: all boxes unchecked (default)

  • If you use DSL, you may want to set #2 above to “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet.”
  • If you use dial-up, you will want to use #2 above to “I only connect to the Internet using dial-up modem.”

C. Proxy Settings: Auto Detect using IE Settings (default)

  • Some people have found that using “Direct connection / No Proxy” have worked for them.
  • Use “Specify Proxy Server” if you use a proxy and complete the information below it for the proxy server > click “OK.”

If absolutely needed: Off-line Update of Definitions: http://www.avast.com/download-update

If all the above actions do not fix your problem, then I suggest an uninstall of Avast and a clean install:

  1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.677) for the product you need and save it to your HDD:
    Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe - (English only)
    Prohttp://www.avast.com/pro-antivirus#tab4
    AIShttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall all previous products of Avast on this machine at this time.
  6. Reboot.
  7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.
  9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know if this fixes your problems. Thank you.
