can't update Avast?

Well I be, I downloaded and installed Avast on my new Toshiba laptop and it absolutely refuses to update itself. What happened? I used Avast before on an older machine, it was fine. I made sure to download the correct version for my 64bit bit Vista.
All I get when ever I try to run the update it always says error connecting to server. I’ve checked all the setting I can find. I been here on this site for a hour now looking to see if this has already been covered previously.
If somebody would please be so kind as to direct me to the info I need, it would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I’ve so far checked out the UAC control, Firewall settings etc:

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

I shut down firewall after I realized update wasn’t working, seems that wasn’t it either. Its puzzling.? I remember I tried using AVG anti virus and that’s why I wanted to try Avast.
I appreciate your interest though, thanks

Shutting down a firewall isn’t always going to work as there are hooks on the system, you also didn’t say what firewall you used ?

Whilst I’m not sure if AVG could get in on the act as far as the update is concerned, but you must ensure that it is fully removed anyway. Use the add remove programs to uninstall as normal and then use the AVG Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.
