Can't update. Can't re-install.

Hello,

I’ve been using Avast Home edition for quite some time now (thank you for that btw) and I’ve encountered a problem I can not resolve myself.

The program won’t update anymore. I get the message in the red frame saying the program was unable to update when starting windows. When I try to update manually nothing happens. I’ve tried uninstalling it via my control panel but nothing happens. I’ve downloaded a new setup.exe, but I get ‘error 00003: spawning message’.

I tried a system restore, still the same problem

I also downloaded the VSP update installer to no avail I get the following error message:

Can’t install update. Please report following errorcodes:
Ver: 4.8.1229
SI: 0x00000002
ST: 0xFFFFFFFF
LE: 0x00000000.

Can anyone tell me how to resolve this?
Thanks alot!
Kind regards

System Restore may actually make the problem worse.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

It would probably be best to first Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

This work in my case and my problem was also probably the same as yours

Cheers Aseem!

I think it did the trick.
The program is updated.
I’m doing a scan right now. Will Avast get rid of the virus that caused this?

Update: Avast got rid of it
