I’m a now user of Avast Free Antivirus. I have it for 2 days. I’m not registered yet, but tried to update and it didnt work
(error: cannot connect to server).
I tried registering it today, and I pressed the button (maintenance window, registration, Register Now button). It opened a new window (initializing) and then all dissappeared and I can see again the Register Now button.
I have Vista, and a wireless internet connection via USB stick.
I even alloed this application to pass through the Firewall, maybe I need to set it somehow for the update as well?
You could try manually setting your firewall to allow avast.setup, which is only created at the time of the update, it would be in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup folder when created (this location is for XP, if using a different OS the C:\Program Files\ bit will differ).
Thank you all for your replies guys, you’re great!!! I also agree that AshUpd is the file, I tried setting it manually, and both Avast and AshUpd are allowed.
If Firewall allows it, and it that’s the right file, I’m really sorry about this, but after I was struggling with a virus maybe my Internet Options settings are set too high?
Do you agree that Firewall is OK, and everything should be ok?
It doesn’t connect to the server… I really don’t know what to do. Any suggestions are highly welcome.
yes, i used many antivirus programmes. That was a mistake, started with Norton and AVG. Then I got the virus infiltrate itself in tne Firewall. Took Norton out of the Registry, used Avira with no success to get rid of the virus. I de-installed it, got Malwarebytes’ Anti Malware and Avast. I have both now - as Avira doesnt update. I dont know how reliable it is now, untill I have it runnning properly I want to keep Malware as well. I guess that’s wrong
I have Windows Firewall. I’ll do the repair and report.
Well, afetr using many, many av programs… there is high probability that there are a lot of left-overs on the system that do block or at least affect each other.
Also, if you had viruses and malware on your system… maybe the best idea would be an installation of the whole system from scratch?
MalwareBytes Antimalware on-demand program and Avast on access program work fine together, AFAIK. I use them both. :o
MANY MANY THANKS!!! Thats a great idea, I’ll reinstall the whole system
I need to correct my previous answer, I got Malwarebytes’ and AVAST (avira was gone in 2 hours
I like them both, was afraid you’ll tell me to get rid off one of them… They are really really good!!
