Can't update definitions

Hi,

I have been unable to update to latest definitions since 25/11. I am using free version of avast! - program 5.0.0677 and current version of definitions is 101125-2.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 with the built-in firewall. I have tried manually updating but it always stops about halfway through and then a vista message pops up saying avast! update has stopped working and has been closed down. I have downloaded the latest definitions from avast! website but when try to install it tells me that I already have latest VPS database? I have also tried repairing and updating avast! via control panel>programs and feature but to no avail.

I’ve never had any problem updating previously - will I have to re-install the whole thing? Or can anyone suggest anything else to try?

Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

Hi,

Re-booting the machine doesn’t do anything.

I’ve attached what you requested (I think) - couldn’t find ‘setup.log’ but found ‘setup’ in the same location - guessing it’s the same thing.

Anything else needed please let me know

Sorry, can’t read your Japanese setup.log…
Did you use the shorter version? Can you try the long (the first) one?

Japanese? On my pc it is in english - any idea why it would be showing as japanese to you? All I did was copy and paste last section of file into new one.

I’ve tried again using same method - won’t let me upload entire log as it exceeds limit

Yep I’ve just seen it come up in japanese when I opened it on this forum - why is this happening?

Maybe it’s being corrupted because you’re changing the file extension.

Part vps_win32-10120100 is installed

It says that the current defs are installed. Maybe it’s just reporting it wrong. Have you tried a repair?

I tried repairing it and it comes up with error message “Error processing packages. Please use full update”

I looked at the log for this error and have copied it below - any advice much appreciated:

Anything else on your computer acting strange lately?

It seems odd that it just stopped working after a while. You could try doing a complete uninstall re-install of avast with the help of the Avast removal tool: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Or maybe you have some memory going bad or something?

Yeah… but that is not the end of the log, it’s in the middle.
Besides, there are two different logs as far I can see (see the dates of both).

Everything else is working fine as far as can tell - it’s probably something to with vista - had a few problems with it in terms of program compatability in the past.

I’ll try a clean re-install and let you know how I get on…

Ok I’ve re-installed avast completely. When removing old version I found files relating to avast verion 4 so got rid of them as well.

I have installed new copy and registered it but still won’t update. Slightly different though, instead of vista error message appearing, it seems to update by saying “saving package” but then stops abruptly. Message within the program itself on the update page then comes up “Last encountered error. Invalid file signature. Setup will terminate.”

i went back to Programs & Features via Control Panel and tried repairing it - same error message as last time. Then tried update option at same time - again seemed to work ok but then at the end it came up with “Update finished. There was an error while changing product configuration”.

The program is now at virus definitions 101011-0. I am worried to use internet now with definitions that are so out of date.

Any advice would be great

Any other security program that could interfere? Firewall?
Old antivirus installed before avast?

avast is the only AV I’ve had on this computer.

Checked vista firewall - avast is set to be allowed through. This is the file extension:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastUI.exe

Is this correct? Do I need to allow something else through in order to enable updates to work?

Also just tried turning off the firewall completely and still won’t update.

Only other thing I can think off is re-installing Vista itself which I don’t want to do. Looks like I may be installing an alternative AV :cry:
