cant update...dont know if its even running

Hey, guys … serious computer dummie on board ;D
Was having problems with AVG … so uninstalled it and installed Avast … or thought I did…
It ran a virus scan and found some stuff… but now Im not sure if it is working or what… Its in the Start menu ( windows XP ) but not in the the little tray ( on the right ) ( I did the rt click ’ show hidden icons’ thing and still nothing ) …
If I click the AVast link in the start menu, I get the pop up that has the update option …but when I click the update button, nothing happens…
Also, I use Firefox and keep getting crashes…
Running XP …also have Zone alarm…
OH yeah, if I click on Avast in the start menu , i get the popup that says its testing the operating menu …then the next pop up is something that shows 5 things about avast ( simple user interface) …
IM totally confused here…

ts in the Start menu ( windows XP ) but not in the the little tray ( on the right )

Looks like there are remnants of AVG on your system still, and that’s making avast not run properly. Download AVG’s removal tool from their site.

And run it.

Re-boot the computer, and see if Avast’s Icon is running.

I don't get what you're saying here. Is it bringing up the simple user interface, or just the readme file or something?

If it’s not bringing up the interface, it probably still has to do with AVG still being on your pc, and will probably be fixed with my previous suggestion…

HI scythe…
Thanks! Ill try running the AVG uninstall thing you suggested…
IM not sure what the interface is… It brings up a screen that looks like a sort of how to get started thing that tells you to run a scan and such … then a rectangular grey window opens up … looks kinda like a car stereo faceplate…has a round button on the left with an arrow to start scanning…and in the center , buttions for things like accessing the virus chest, setting the sensitivity of the scanner and one for updates…

Ok, on the bottom of the window that tells you “how to get started”, there’s a checkbox that you can uncheck if you don’t want it to show up every time.

The “car stereo” is avast’s simple user interface.

Hey marci, If you don’t like the look of the Avast interface you can download skins from here:
