Cant update - HTTP 404 error

Hi All, my notebook is running XP Pro SP3 +all and after much difficulty with upgrading from AVG 7 to AVG 8 , I recently changed to Avast 4.8 Home but have been unable to update - i am currently at 4.8-1229. When trying to update the database I always get HTTP error (404) - can anyone point me in he correct direction to get past this problem. Best regards, Jim

How are you trying to update ?
The 404 error is normally associated with web browsing and avast doesn’t use your browser to update.

What is your firewall ?

I would also suggest you run this to ensure all remnants of AVG are gone - AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one. Reboot after using this tool.

The latest version of avast is 4.8.1335, so I would suggest you do a manual program update, right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select Updating, Program Update.

Or download the program from, http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again.

Thanks Derek,

My Firewall in the one that comes with XP.

I have just downloaded and run the avgremover - it didn’t seem to find anything to remove.

I had been trying to update manually all along via right click on aball - that is when I get the HTTP error - would it help to send you the error log?

However the above has worked and the manual update is in progress

Thanks a lot, Jim

No problem Fred :stuck_out_tongue:

Only joking Jim. my name is David.

I doubt the log would go into any more details and as you say things appear to be working now.

Welcome to the forums.

Hi David

Back again - the download started yesterday evening but I had to cancel it as we had a power failure nad my UPS would not have lasted long enough to complete the download.

Now today I am back to the same HTTP error.

Any suggestions?

Jim

Jim, do you use a VPN Connection or a Proxy server to connect the Internet? does your ISP limit your connection? do you use any other software to use Internet anonymous or somethings like that?

Hello,

I need help. I keep on receiving the http 404 error these past 7 days. My avast version is 4.8.1335 already but it cannot perform automatic updates.

Any advice? Or will I just continue doing manual update for virus database and program?

Thanks and regards,
Marya

Please check if the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def is displayed correctly, it should contain [servers] on the first line.

You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder, disabling the avast self-defense module first.

How do you connect to internet, is it ADSL? And do you have other computers with working avast updates using the same connection?

Try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.

thanks for the tip about setting the proxy settings. the small problem is in that part. thanks again!

Glad I could help. You’re welcome.
