Can't update my new Avast Free installation.

Hello.

I just downloaded and installed Avast Free v5.0.677 in an updated, old Windows 2000 SP4 in VMware Workstation v4.5.3 (256 MB of RAM) on an updated XP Pro. SP3 host machine. I cannot seem to get it to get updates. It always get hangs with “Step 1/2” and “Initializing, please wait…” even after 20 minutes. I ran IE6 to see if Internet work, and it did.

Does Avast not work under old VMware Workstation or something? I don’t use any fancy proxy settings and stuff. I do use NAT in it and on my host machine:
