can't update, please help

Hello, for some time already I’m not able to update virus database nor program itself.

My program version is 7.0.1489, virus database version is130828-0 .

When I try to update from within the program, I get “Initializing, please wait” message that hangs there for hours and nothing happens.
Downloading the installer did not help either, error message pops up right after launching it saying “the exception unknown software exception (0xc0000417) occured in the application at location 0x00348aac”. When I tried again, the location number was a bit different. Also another error “the installer cannot copy the installer binary to the avast! directory by calling /path on disk/ executable. (code 0x5)” pops up right after the first one.

Please help me solve this, I’d love to have my avast up-to-date. Thank you!

I'd love to have my avast up-to-date.
If so, why are you using a very old version?

Hi and thanks for reply! I did think that once it finally manages to update, it will switch to the latest version (I see I was wrong). I followed the steps you recommended and all seems to be fine now.
