Can't Update Program

hello… i just installed avast 7-free… no problems… however, when i run the updater it just hangs… it says “step 1/2; initializing; please wait”… the update progress-bar doesn’t show any progress…

for testing, i tried running “update program”, too, but with the same results…

the only thing that i can think of that might be causing the problem is that i have something disabled, on my computer, which is preventing the updating-process from working properly, but what could it be? i have lots of things disabled, like “HTA”, “windows scripting host”, “DCOM”, “NTVDM”, some services, too, like “server” and “task scheduler”… however, usually, if something is disabled and, so, fails to run, i will see a message, of some type, indicating, one way or another, that something failed to run, and i am not seeing anything like that…

i am not seeing a problem with my firewall, no outbound connections being blocked…

the avast program shows that the “cloud” connections are connected…

the only thing that i can think of that could be causing the problem is that i have something on my computer disabled, like maybe “DCOM”, for example, that is causing the problem… i just need to figure out where the problem is…

does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

i checked in windows “events” and didn’t see any problems that were registered there… “avast” says that everything is good…all secure…

incidentally, i had this same problem, where i couldn’t get “avast” to update, when i tried “avast” before, in the past…

i am running windows xpsp3, fully updated, and the “windows firewall”…
