Can't update virus database

I noticed in windows 7 today that it said my virus info was out of date. I tried pushing update and it said it was already up to date which it’s not. I tried manually downloading the update and installing and it gave me the following screen cap. Any ideas? This is for Avast 5 free edition.

Hi Kamakzie,

Can you try updating the program, as the latest official version is 5.0.418. This may help.

I just tried and it says the program is up to date…

As you can see from my image, both of those are wrong…

Can you try a repair of avast!

Start -->control panel -->Programs -->uninstall a program -->avast! Antivirus -->Click 'Uninstall/Change -->Scroll down and click repair

I downloaded the beta version and updated it and it seems to have fixed the issue. Thanks!

You’re welcome

I’m having a similar problem with a clean install of Windows XP home and a first install of avast! 5 Free Edition. At boot up, avast! reports that the last update attempt failed and recommends trying again. Manual updates always work.

This is a Compaq laptop that was rebuilt after a hard disk crash. Windows is fully patched and there has never been another antivirus application on this machine. Everything else works flawlessly (like the essentially “new” machine that it is).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

I’m sure something funny is going on with Avast 5 definition updates today ???
As both my laptop & desktop have both been acting strange regarding updates.

Yesterday

Laptop & desktop - Both updated on Start Up 8)
Desktop - was shut down early afternoon yesterday.
Laptop - updated again later on that day ( After Desktop Shut Down! )
Today
Laptop - Updated on Start Up!
Desktop - Did NOT update on Start Up :o
Laptop - Red box popped up this afternoon … Saying something like… " Your last update Failed! "
NOTE: Clicked update in the Red Box … But again Avast 5 Failed to update
So… Opened Avast 5 - & - Updated Successfully … I Think! :-
Not Sure Now! … Think I need to take another look at the Definition update number.
Desktop - Knowing it hadn’t had any automatic updates… Updated it Myself!

Still Using - 5.0.418
Definitely think something funny is going on today ::slight_smile:

Just Checked!
Laptop & Desktop Both Say… Definition: 100307-0

Similar here. I had changed the default update check frequency from 240 to 120 minutes. When I powered up this morning, Avast automatically checked for updates but there was none. About 30 minutes or so later, I got my email notification from support@asw.cz about today’s iAVS update. After over 3 hours with no automatic update, I manually updated without error. There was no automatic check after the initial one at startup.

Perhaps the 240 default for Avast Free is now hardcoded and the 120 minutes minimum is no longer honored as was stated on this forum. I guess that I should have waited to see if it would trigger at 240 minutes. Either that or the propagation of updates to the nodes is not occurring in a timely fashion.

I’ve not changed any of my Update settings for… Avast 5 Free
In fact!
All my Avast 5 settings are still at - Default 8)
Just!
Avast 5 Updates … Strange Today!

For sure, the free version has an update time limitation (for the automatic update) that I think it’s 120 minutes. But I could be wrong about the number.

I had this issue for two days with my Avast 5. Today was the first time where I checked and I got automatic updates without an error. I mentioned that in the post before this one. I think this is an intermittent server problem. I don’t think it has anything to do with the program because for the last three days, many people have been having this problem.

I also, three days ago, did not change any settings to cause this issue. However, based on a composite of recommendations from the board and my own computer experience, my settings are now as follows (Avast 5 Free)

“My Computer is Always Connected to the Internet. Checked.”

“No Proxy, Direct Connection”, used

“Automatic Definitions Update”

“Ask When Program Update Becomes Available”

Running Windows XP (SP-3) With Wireless Home Networking (TWC-Roadrunner) and NetGear Router.

@Jack 1000,

I have virtually the same setup: Windows XP Home SP3, Road Runner for my ISP, and a Netgear wireless router. All but one of my machines is a laptop, which can roam around and might not always be connected to the Internet. I don’t think a laptop user should have to check the “always connected” option for the avast! automatic updater to work. The updater should be able to detect whether a network connection exists and, if not, not even bother to try the update.
