i’m using avast 4.5 home edition.
i scanned today and found a virus called Win:32.Trojan.gen{other}. the program said that it was removed succesfully but i read on a forum about viruses that the only good way to remove it was manually (which i dont know how to do) can i be sure that avast was able to remove it?
today i was unable to connect when i wanted to check if there were any updates. why is that? was the server down or soemthing? i found some avast files in the temp forlders in documts and settings u know, i hope… ;D I usually remove those temporary files… could avast have problems if i do so… i was wondering if i removed soem files that made it impossible to update… in that case i’ll reinstall it. what do u think i should do?
This is some of the things in the avast log… is this of use? it said that the virus was removed successfully but i’m not 100% sure if u can trust programs…

Hi again. a scanned it all over again and found another file hidden in a zip file and that´s removed too and i turned of the system restoring thing and restarted my comp and put it back on but i still cant update. should i try reinstalling avast4? do i have any other choice?
The only things that are bother me right now is that i cant update avast and i found this in my new usb storage:
Sign of “Win32:SdBot-266 [Trj]” has been found in “H:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-583907252-1454471165-839522115-1003\Dh2\serialz 2k.7.1.plus.zip\setup.exe\setup-1.bin” file.
It said an error accured while removing it… is it still there is it gone?
I run both norton antivirus+firewall and avast on my computer. when i start windows avast says that it cant run at same time as norton and resident scanner and a few other things were disabled. i dotn think it´s norton blocking my updates cause then i’d have had this problem earlier. norton is the only firewall i´m using. norton doesn’t find any of these viruses…
these are a few other things in my avast log file:
Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004.
An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.

thanks for all your help. hope this will be of use…
I run both norton antivirus+firewall and avast on my computer
Remove NAV completly using the uninstall util. NAV and Avast do not work together and lead to conflicts. In the worse case it may even lead to no av protection at all.
Is avast better than norton? Norton has a built in firewall but the anitivirus seems to be skipping a few viruses… i think i’ll keep norton firewall and try avg 6 instead. that´s free and i have had no problems with that and norton at the same time… however if i dont remove any of my program i’d still have to reinstall avast cause it wont update i guess i screwed it up somehow. updateing avast manually is too much work lol
anyway i scanned the computer again and avast found nothing this time not even in the recycle bin in my usb harddrive. so i guess it´s gone. however i have another question, maybe u know an
answer… how can i see what´s in the recycle bin in my usb storage harddisc when there´s no icon for the bin. enabling hidden files didn’t do it. do i have to enable the view system files?
thanks very much for your advice i’ll think about which antivirus and firewalls i should use.
right now i have on this computer. avast4.5, norton antivirus firewall, spybot search and destroy, ad-aware SE, SpywareBlaster.
Hi Heggi,
AVG6 is no longer supported as of a. mid-December’04.
Download AVG7 which comes in a free version as well. Before setting it up, read the PDF file so you do it correctly. Some people are having problems with their emails. Google for the AVG free forum and check out what problems you may get and see what others did to get it working properly.
Like you I had problems with Norton’s and AVG. I chose to stick with AVG6 and then had no problems.
However, I couldn’t get AVG7 to work properly with my emails, so now have AVAST and finding it really great. Has already saved my bacon yesterday. Good luck in what ever you choose to do.
@Heggi
Regardless of what you decide to do Norton’s AV is notorious for being difficult to get rid of and causes conflict with other AV programs. avast!, is disabling itself, rather than run and cause potential conflicts, lock-ups, etc.
So even if you decided to get AVG7 you would still have potential problems with Norton.
There are many happy avast!, ex Norton and AVG user populating these forums, so many feel that avast! is better and well worth the effort to get rid of NAV to enable avast to run unhindered.
The only thing preventing me from unistalling norton is that i dont know which firewalls are good… do u know any good free firewalls?
thanks for all help!
I use the freeware version of Outpost which works well with avast and there is always the freeware version of Zone Alarm. I couldn’t really recommend the current version of Sygate as there have been a number of problems with the latest version.
I have given you the basic information you will have to do some due diligence and select what is best for you.
Two AVs running at the same time is not advisable too much chance of conflict.
If you uninstall avast for AVG (free version totally no support, unlike the support you are getting here) and IMHO not as good as avast. I left AVG for avast and it is a much better more flexible.
ok. i think i’ll stay with avast cause i heared of many ppl leaving it for avast but i need to reinstall avast cause it wont update automatically…
i’ve had avg and norton running on another computer without problems. but i´d need a new firewall isntead of norton then. but i dont know which would be the best. do u know any free good firewall were i´d get some support too if i needed it.
i´m reading about problems with different firewalls on www.download.com but it seems to me that there is no firewall that dont have a single problem… so this is a hard choice for me.
