I just installed Avast 4.0 and obtained a new licence key. I was able to key in the new registration key into the program successfully. However, when I tried updating the antivirus definitions, an error msg appeared saying that there was an error in updating the definitions because the key was eithe invalid or expired.
But the thing is, I just obtained the registration key only. I’m using Zone Alarm Pro and have granted Avast full access to the internet. Can anyone help me? TIA!
First of all make sure Zonealarm Firewall is alowing access to Ashmai, Ashdisp, and Avastsetup so Avast can update.
If that don’t work use copy & paste method to enter it into avast!; keep in mind that this number can´t be used on any server operating system. You have to be logged in Windows with administrators rights (to enter they key).
Also check if your system date is set correctly. The license key is valid for one year, so if you changed the system date to value when the key is expired, it become invalid. In that case set the system date correctly and enter the same license key again.
I checked the date on my system and realised dat it was different from my BIOS date. Adjusted it back to current date and hey it worked! Thanx a mil man! ;D
me too. same problem. system’s got correct date. for sure i’ve downloaded new licence key for avast. i’m admin, firewall’s ok. still, it can’t download any updates…
no. i’m not getting that message. avast just notifies me that the licence key is invalid or expired so it can’t download anything. bios is also set to correct date. should i send you my setup.log file and licence key?
i’ve checked this before, about box (licence key section) says that check for new updates feature (i’m guessing, czech version:) will expire on September 2005. licence key never expires.
i’ve got a very similar problem. Avast did work for one month with the avast! 4 Home Edition licence key I got by mail. But since today, i got the “The license key for this product is invalid.” message. I post my log to, cause it’s a bit different from your’s.
You need to relicence to get updates. It is true that the programme never expires but to update the virus database you need to re-register annualy and you have currently expired go here http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG
It is good to know that you have solved your problem. If something similar should happen again, you might try doing a repair of avast program.
If you are using XP as the OS:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > select Avast anti-virus > Change/Remove > scroll down & select Repair > Ok & follow the directions. You need to be on-line to do this.
Be sure to come back often, learn more, and maybe help others.
