can't use some adobe flash/active x - help!

hello all. i’m new to avast and i did spend some time browsing/searching before asking this question. apologies in advance if i’m being redundant, but i would really like some help. and if you know a better way i can find previous subjects so as not to be redundant again in the future, feel free to let me know. i want to be a good neighbor! lol…

so here’s my thing:

the basic question: can i do something to avast to customize it to allow me to play games that require the latest version of adobe flash player? a much more detailed version of this question, including the step-by-step of what i’ve encountered and already tried is below if you choose to read it. thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me. it might be something very simple but i’ve spent a long time and much research trying to fix it myself and i just can’t!! ???

detailed version of the question: i’m trying to do something very simple: let my daughter play a game on bigfishgames.com that requires adobe flash. where the game should be on the screen, that box is instead filled with a message that says i need the most recent version of adobe flash player with a link to adobe to go and get it. i go, i download and install it according to screen prompts making sure everything else is closed, it shows the flash movie and message on the adobe website saying the download/install was successful and says i may need to reboot so i do. then when i come back from reboot and try to go to the game again, i get the same message in the box where the game should be, again saying i need the most recent version of adobe flash player. i’ve done the troubleshooting on the adobe website, and without changing my computer’s registry which i’m afraid to do (it has a very technical attempted fix that involves doing this), the only other thing i haven’t tried in their troubleshooting is changing my firewall or other things like avast. avast is the only protective software i have on my computer, so i’m assuming (hoping) that i just need to change some setting in avast to allow flash player to work for this game. i’ve searched and searched the avast help files that downloaded with my avast program as well and found nothing where i can customize what avast allows in this way. help!!

thanks so much in advance for any help anyone can give me.

Hi…

Well, I’ll try to give you as much help as I can on this. I don’t think avast is your problem.

First, what version of Windows are you running and are you using Internet Explorer for your browser? If yes, which version? If no, what is the browser? Also, can you give me the version (or versions) of Flash Player listed in “Add/Remove Programs?” In the Home Premium version of Windows Vista, possibly other versions as well, this will be called “Programs and features.”

May God Bless you and your daughter!

update

i decided to temporarily turn off avast to see if i could load the game then, but it still gave me the same message in the game screen - so maybe avast isn’t it??? or has it already blocked whatever won’t allow the game and could still be avast??? maybe i should try downloading flash player again with avast off??? i am really frustrated! at this point i just want to beat this problem even more than i really want to run the game. my daughter does have other games. but you know when you just have to figure something out!!! lol… thanks again if anyone can help.

thank you! i am runing windows xp professional version 5.1 and internet explorer version 7. the flash player is version 10 active x. i think you may be right about avast not being the problem. i was posting an update to that affect while you were posting this. i appreciate your trying to help even with a non-avast problem. i hope it isn’t a registry problem. this is a very new computer and i know just enough about computers to get me in trouble! lol…

Hi…

Hmm. I’m assuming you upgraded from the 9th version of Flash player. In either case, playing the game shouldn’t have been a problem. ???

My first suggestion would be to uninstall Flash Player 10 using this tool…

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1

then run a registry cleaner such as this one…

http://www.download.com/TweakNow-RegCleaner-Standard/3000-2094_4-10262639.html

Then reinstall Flash Player from here…

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Let us know how this works.

Best Regards…

:frowning: didn’t work…

i uninstalled, ran a registry cleaner, re-installed, went back to game, same message in game screen
:frowning:

my computer doesn’t have any other problems. i really want to get to the bottom of this. dammit!!

oh. and other games on that same site still work that we’ve played before. to remind, it’s bigfishgames.com (not that it probably matters).

Hi…

Stay calm.

What is the game in question?

Best Regards…

The problem is with the game(s) itself. They are (badly) programmed to check the flash version. What happens is that they are programmed for (let’s say) version 8 and you have a newer version. They check if you have version 8, but do not look any further. Therefore the game(s) think you do not have the latest version installed while you have. Only thing you can do is contact the author and tell him. He/she is the one that should solve the problem in the game code. Nothing you can do about it. It is just bad programming.

Try to find that (or a simulair) game on another website.
Try Yahoo games

oh wow! that’s very good information! i thought something was wrong with my computer. and you’re sure this is the problem??? i’m very relieved if so.

Hi…

It’s quite possible since it’s only the one game that isn’t running correctly. I ddn’t realize what Eddy had mentioned is a problem with these games.

Best Regards…

thank you thank you everyone!!! it’s so good to find a place where people are so responsive. best wishes to all.
