CarPhone Warehouse Firewall?

Hi,

I just upgraded to Avast 5.0.677

During the upgrade I got a split second message on my screen saying something like “Carphone Warehouse Firewall Receipt” which then disappeared at once.

???

Can anyone tell me what might be going on please - I have now done a full virus scan and no problems were flagged up; Malwarebytes is now scanning the system as well.

Thanks,

Ric

Hello a_vast and welcome to the forum.

Please post your MBAM log (cut and paste). If you have a 32-bit machine, make sure your Avast definitions are up to date and also do a boot-time scan; any infections please put in the Virus Chest where they will be safe (do NOT delete).

Are you having problems with your machine like being redirected from other sites while online or anything else? If so, when did this start?

Was this a pop-up that occurred? If so, was it during the installation of Avast? Does Avast seem to be working properly? Are all shields up and running? Please leave all settings at default for now.

Could you give me some information about your system:

  1. What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit?
  2. What product of Avast did you install? Free, Pro, AIS?
  3. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including antivirus (AV), firewall (FW), and other security programs? If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?

5.0.677 is the Avast I am running, AIS I think. Appears to be running normally.

it was a pop-up which occurred as I was paying for Avast - I presumed ‘carphonewarehouse’ was somehow connected with the transaction however became suspicious when CPWH did not appear on the Avast billing paperwork.

previously was McAfee incl firewall - removed by way of program uninstall + manually

this is a 32 bit AMD64 2Core Win7 upgrade (from Vista)

i upgraded from free Avast because I noticed my pc had frozen (crashed) last night, so I got worried.

no i’m not being redirected to other sites. Malwarebytes [latest version] was ‘0’ infected files. Not sure yet how to look at the results for the Avast virus scan - it left me with no alerts on my screen however - i did a full Avast antivirus scan last night after upgrading to full version.

More later

Thanks

Ric

just opened the File System Shield log - there are no instances of any virus since the download of Avast.

this is all i can find under Malwarebytes log: the scan found zero issues:-

It looks like you have MBAM Pro (paid version). To find your log in MBAM, look under the tab labled “Logs.” Double click on this log file and you can cut and paste the log into this thread.

As for finding the results of any Avast scans: Open the Avast GUI > Scan Computer > Scan Logs > Scroll down if necessary to see your log and date with the result (if there is something positive > click on the entry and a new window will open up with details).

To clarify, you had McAfee, uninstalled it using their uninstaller tool, then installed Avast Free, then upgraded to Avast AIS. And everything seems to be working fine with your Avast product. Correct?

Since you have a 32-bit machine, I would do a Boot-time scan, which will force your machine to reboot itself. This is a different type of scan. Again, report back with your results.

I’m not sure why you got this pop-up unless it was while you did not have a firewall running at the time…or did you enable Windows FW in the meantime? But at least for now after your boot scan if it comes out clean, we can rule out malware.

got it!

what’s GUI please?

what's GUI please?

Really? (Just like the Win phone 7 commercials) lol.

GUI means the interface. He said, Open the Avast GUI (the avast screen).

Sorry about that…I won’t use abbreviations next time.

how do I start a boot scan please?

no worries ;D

cool - will update

After your boot scan, please check the following:

I noticed that when you did your MBAM scan, you are using an outdated version of MBAM. Version 1.50 is out now. You should probably update if it hasn’t already done so on it’s own since you have the Pro version or verify that you have the latest version by clicking MBAM > “About” tab (tab on far right).

boot scan pending - MBAM now updated: w/ thanks

Let us know the results of your boot scan and please post your MBAM log. Thanks.

boot scan coming up

boot-time scan is ‘no virus found’ -

do not know how to copy&paste from Avast though.

I do not think you can copy/paste from the Avast! UI, only take a screenshot.

I see a question that has not been asked yet.

Is Carphone Warehouse your ISP? (Internet Service Provider). Or do you have AOL UK? (if that still applies, I know CW bought Aol UK a few years ago) As it is a legitimate company, this might be nothing to worry over.
