I have been using the free version of Avast for approx the last 4 years and have it installed on both my laptops and my netbook.
I have a CCTV system installed in my house that can be viewed using my laptop through the DYNDNS web site and using Video Viewer (0.1.7.4).
There are no problems logging onto the system and viewing ‘live’ stream, but now when I try to view recorded footage, the viewer shows a default window that says “playback failed”. I have tested/checked the Unit and playback works fine (viewing through a monitor).
This is a recent anomaly, but I think the problem may have started after an upgrade (I don’t know for sure!); the problem is apparent on both laptops but NOT on the netbook! I guess that’s because I am usually slow to upgrade this as it is not used very often and is still running a previous version of Avast -
Laptops - 6.0.1289
Netbook - 6.0.1203
Checking the various ‘Shield’ settings etc between the netbook and the laptops I found that they are identical (or appear to be!)
If Avast is temporarily disconnected, the laptops can then access the recorded footage without any problems; I went on to discover that it is ‘Web Shield’ that seems to be causing this problem - I have inserted various things like .tv .tv/ and *dyndns.tv in the exclusion box, but as you may have guessed already…It didn’t make any difference.
I don’t know if any of you Gurus out there have come across this type of problem but Bob 3160 seems to think this will be a walk in the park for some of you/.
If you have, then I would be very grateful to hear from you.
Two things which can cause problems with CCTV streaming:
that they don’t strictly comply with the HTTP Protocol and that can cause issues for the web shield which scans http content.
So you can exclude a specific IP address from being scanned, avastUI, Settings, Troubleshooting, Redirect Settings and add the IP address to the Ignored addresses list, see image.
the new function of scanning all http traffic, where the application responsible for the upload/streaming under the old setup would only scan well-known browser processes.
You can elect to revert to how the Web Shield used to work; avastUI, Real-Time Shields, Web Shield, Expert Settings, check the ‘Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only’, see image2.
Don't try both together try the first and see if that works before trying option 2 if it didn't work.
Welcome to the Forum Geoff,
I told you it wouldn’t take long to solve your problem and that DavidR would probably be the person
to come up with the right answer.
Hi, first post here. I only registered to thank Geoff and DavidR for asking and answering a question that’s been eluding me for some time now.
I was getting “Video playback failed” for no apparent reason from my CCTV playback, I have a wireless bridge set up to network the DVR unit. I know my networking stuff and was baffled as I was getting the live feed only.
Thankyou very much I’ve been pulling my hair out over this for ages. ;D
