My internet provider is dccnet.com. I am using Outlook Express.
Server Information
My incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
Incoming mail (POP3): pop3.dccnet.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP): mail.dccnet.com

Why is it that periodically the above information is changed as follows:
Server Information
My incoming mail server is POP3 server.
Incoming mail (POP3): 170.0.0.1

These changes appear to be made by AVAST. Can anyone tell me if this is so, and why? These changes are causing difficulties when I try to send messages to certain individuals. The messages are not getting through.
Are you using Windows 98 or Me? I know that in your signature shows XP…
avast Mail Wizard shouldn’t be available in XP, so it shouldn’t be changed by avast.
Do you use any other spam killer?
I have no other spam killer. I don’t understand what you mean by “AVAST Mail Wizard”. Are there any “installed providers” that could be terminated so that AVAST would be prevented from scanning any incoming or outgoing mail. I use a mail scanner called Choicemail which gives me great control over anything that wants to come in before the mail gets on my computer. I can preview incoming mail while it is still on the server. I doubt that these changes would be made by Choicemail because when I check the “Email account settings” in Choicemail they are as they should be.
Thanks to both of you, tech and alanrf. You are right in saying that Choicemail changes the server addresss to localhost (127.0.0.1). I removed Choicemail, changed the server address to that suggested by dccnet, then reinstalled Choicemail. The server address had been restored to localhost. Which leaves me with my problem. Why are messages sent to one person not getting through, when they had been getting through for about eight months now? If I exit Choicemail and return the server address to pop3.dccnet.com for Incoming Mail and mail.dccnet.com for Outgoing Mail, then the messages do get through to this person.
I can work around the problem by exiting Choicemail, changing the server address to that recommended by the local server dccnet, sending my message, reverting back to the proxy addresses and reactivating Choicemail.
I agree with you Tech. I’m glad to say that I’ve solved the problem. I had been using Choicemail Free for the past couple of years. It’s only in the last month or so that I began having problems, with certain messages not getting through. Digital Portal which produces Choicemail insist that users can keep on using Choicemail Free, that they are not intentionally making the program disfunctional. The last straw for me came this Monday (Sept 1) when users were asked to register a User Code and Key which I downloaded from their site, but there was no popup where one could insert the info. That’s when I decided to upgrade to Choicemail One, the paid version. All problems have been resolved.
