Hi.
Is there any way to change the portnumbers for the AVAST-update? It uses port 80/http by default.
In our family firewall I have blocked port 80/443 for 2 of our PC’s (I use fixed IP-addresses in the family network to identify them) but still want the AVAST update to run automatically.
I tried to open for some avast.com IP addresses (found out by scanning the traffic) but they change repeatedly.
Tried even to connect one of these IP-addresses in hosts file with avast.com, but still no success.
Therefore I thought instead, if there is any possibility to change the port number used for the update to some other fixed one, I would be able to open up just for this port for the dedicated PC’s.
avast uses the http protocol for updates and as such uses the http port, there is no program Setting that can be set in the GUI to change ports and as far as I know it can’t be changed in the avast4.ini either.
There are a lot of update servers so there are sufficient servers so people can get updates and avast allocates server IPs according to load to balance things across all servers. A list is in the servers.def file in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup folder.
Not very helpful I’m afraid, but you could choose to update those two computers manually. avast! VPS Update - Manual Download - download using a system with port 80 internet connection, save the file (or CD or USB drive) and copy to the other 2 networked systems and run it to update the VPS signatures file.
Thanks David for the input.
Of course, I can do it manually … seems to be the only way… and this is what I did until now …
or I open for some of the servers in the list you advised me about.
So this was valuable, because now I can at least find the used servers easier.
I will see if this is a possible way. :-\
I will come back later to this topic and let you know.
