I selected Maintenance, Settings, Updates and then tried to change ‘Engine & Virus Definitions’ from Automatic to ‘Ask When an Update is Available’ clicked on ‘OK’ at the bottom and it just won’t save, reverts back to ‘Automatic’. What’s going on, any ideas why this is happening anyone please?
Personally I feel it is a bad decision to do that as these updates are incremental, why do you feel it necessary to do that ?
That aside - are you logged on using a restricted user account when using avast ?
Not sure what that means - I’m using the Free edition, does that have restricted use because it allows me to select the ‘ask’ or ‘manual’ options?
It has nothing to do with avast as such, the limited/restricted user account I mentioned relates to your operating system user status. Those logging on as a limited user account would find that avast won’t allow changes.
My account has administrative status - is that what you mean?
Yes that is what I mean, OS accounts without higher privileges than limited user wouldn’t be able to make change to avast settings.
Try a repair of avast:
Win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.
You may need to reboot after the repair.
Your signature still shows you as having avast 7, the latest version of avast is 8.0.1489, it also shows an old version of firefox, hopefully it is only an out of date signature rather than out of date software that could leave you more vulnerable.
Sorry, yes it’s an old signature, not often on this forum but have updated it now. Hmmm, not getting very far with this, I’m not doing a repair because the main AV is all working perfectly. I’m wondering if the updates settings only save if you have a password set for that section, can’t find anything in the Help or FAQ section.
A repair would still be advisable as it will try to fix any problems found, it will not change any of your personal settings.

well clearly it isn’t running perfectly as it isn’t saving the settings, a repair would probably take under a minute.

if a password had been set then when trying to make changes then you would have been asked for a password and you didn’t mention being asked for a password.
