I’m using Avast Version 4.8 and I recently changed from Eudora to Thunderbird. How can I check to see if the mails are being scanned? I only imported E-mails and Address book from Eudora. Then I removed Eudora from system. Do I have to do something else? In the Thunderbird tutorials it gives a link to Avast for Eicar standard Anti-virus Test file information. But when I click on it it comes up as URL not found. If I go to Avast and search for Eicar nothing is found. In these posts I see reference to a Mail scanner, is this something that I should be seeing when downloading E-Mails?
Thanks George
What is your OS ?
Just check the email headers there will be line entries for the avast scan.
Open the Internet Mail provide, detailed view window, Last scanned: and Scanned count: fields would show this activity.
There will be an additional icon in the system tray, whilst email is being scanned (or checked for), the avast ‘a’ icon will also rotate.
So more checks than you can shake a stick at really ;D
What exactly are you doing here in relation to your comment ?
If I go to Avast and search for Eicar nothing is found.
Thanks for replying David R.
First My OS is WIN XP Home Edition SP3.
I’m a little thick between the ears on this computer stuff. When I was using Eudora, there would be, as you say, a line in the header stating it was scanned by AVAST. There doesn’t appear to be that statement when I open an E-Mail in Thunderbird. As I’m a new user of Thunderbird I went to their forums to see if I could find out anything there. That is where I found the URL for EICAR.
When you say " Open the Internet Mail provide, detailed view window, Last scanned: and Scanned count: fields would show this activity." Do you mean Open Thunderbird? If you mean Avast HOW?
Thanks George
Left click on the avast ‘a’ icon, that will show the On-Access scanner, Click the Details… >> button. Now you will see a list of all providers click the Internet Mail one, see image.
If you don’t see anything in the headers then it isn’t being scanned, did you see the email icon in my previous image (click to enlarge).
What is your ISP ?
Do you use SSL email (secure encrypted) ?
The questions above could be why emails aren’t scanned, if they are encrypted avast can’t scan them in this current version. There are tools to help but no point crossing that bridge yet.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. I normally have my toolbar hidden, which is why I never saw the icon that appears when E-mail is being downloaded or sent. When I unchecked the auto-hide and downloaded some mail the icon appeared. When I clicked on the Avast scanner ball it showed it had checked the mail. So everything is working OK. Why it’s not showing on the e-mails, I have no idea. It might be there but I can’t find it. Anyway that doesn’t concern me as long as I know it’s being scanned and I’m protected.
