I guess we don’t know much about what to do . . . the above virus shows in the Chest with two diffeent Transfer Times. We don’t know what it is, shoud we keep it in the chest, etc. Also, there is an X in the safety shield incon and when we open it, it says that Avast is Off. So how dowe turn it ON?

Chest is Quarentine, completely safe to keep the viruses there, they can’t go out of there and cause any harm.
Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
I think after infection it’s not just ‘starting’ the protection again. But you can try, right click the ‘a’ blue icon and choose start.
It will be good if you can you schedule a boot-time scanning:
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.

We are using Windows XP. I did the Repair and it said it was successful. When we are on line the Avast blue ball is turning, which we “assume” means it must be working, but when clicking on the security shield icon, the Windows Security Icon the screen shows: Firewalls is On; Automatic Updates is on, Virus Protection off. When clicking on the “off” option it says that Vast reports that it is turned off. So, we don’t know whether it’s on or off.
Will try the boot scan.

Check the task manager processes, for ashServ.exe that is the main scanning engine and I believe the one WSC is monitoring.
If you are able to do scans and you can see the avast icon rotating the scanning engine is at work and would appear to be present and working, so it may be a failing in the WSC.
Have (or did) you have another AV installed in this system, if so what and how did you get rid of it ?
Any other antivirus in your computer (even disabled)?
Which is the language of your system and the language of avast package you’re trying to install?
