chkdsk run problem; AIS v 8 appears to freeze XP at logon window.

Testing AIS version 8 as trial.

avast! free and Online Armor have been completely removed prior to installing AIS trial, despite what sig says below. Windows firewall is enabled.

If I run chkdsk C: /f/v in admin via cmd window and reboot, and do not check off load avast! services only after loading other services, then chkdsk does not even run. System hang ensues and force quit is only way out. Selecting Last Known Good in Safe Mode restores normal operation. Hourglass is only symptom of system hang.

If I run chkdsk C: /f/v in admin and reboot, and check off load avast! services only after loading other services prior to running chkdsk via cmd window, then chkdsk does run. System reboots and Windows bar scrolls, and at the moment the Windows logon screen should appear, system hang occurs. Force quit out and choose Last Known Good works. Again, the hourglass is a symptom.

I had the exact same issue with another XP Pro system I was working on earlier this year as above. Only difference was the user did not have a password enabled for his account. Unable to resolve that issue at that time in any other way than to uninstall AIS trial with his system.

I’m afraid a full system dump would be needed, taken at the moment the system is frozen (PS/2 keyboard required, description here: https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71)

Expect the dump to come in tomorrow. (Have a PS2 board)

Really want to see what is hanging here; likely a rare issue due to some certain configuration I’ve run in the past.

Discovered string ending in \i8042pst\Parameters does not exist in registry. ??? What to do now?

Start Run type sfc /scannow Put in xp disk when box popup exit then press ok in run box will repair windows.Note space between sfc and /

Thank you, Arizona. Ran sfc /scannow once again, good to go.

Was hearing a second beep after POST completed, saw a keyboard error flash on, used the PS2 board, and POST keyboard error gone. Was using an USB board, that one was causing the beep error. Back to a single beep on POST now with the PS2.

Intriguingly, could not replicate the system hang once I put the PS2 in service. Sorry, no dump to provide.

I did find the i8042prt string and set it up if it should hang again.

Seems was on the way to fixing one problem, and fixed another.
