good luck and welcome to the forum.
Here is how that day went… Google Chrome said one of my add-ons (AdBlocker) wanted more permissions or something, and until I told it yes or no, it had disabled the add-on. Of course I told it yes, because I wanted it to still be able to block ads. Then for some reason a Java update window came up across my screen, but I was not given a choice whether or not to install. After this, every Add-On I had in Chrome refused to function and even when I tried to go to Google itself, all I got was the “Oh snap” screen Chrome gives when something isn’t working right. I switched to Firefox and tried to read up about what could be making this happen and how to get rid of it. Strange thing, I would google for sites I had already been to before in the past that loaded normally, and now instead of the actual website, it was loading some search engine instead that gave links based on the words.
I did an avast boot time scan and tried to find what the hell was doing this… I don’t remember what the exact name of what it had found (I think it was Alero or something), but I chose to delete it. When my machine rebooted, I tried to click the My Computer icon, the cursor went to hourglass, and I waited much longer than I should, than tried again a few times. This was after I had waited and let everything in my system tray load. I opened TaskManager and saw atleast 5 instances Explorer.exe, I had read somewhere that a certain type of virus made Explorer.exe corrupt, and that sometimes killing off the instances except for one worked. I did that, and sure enough the My Computer window finally loaded.
But I had to do this -every time- I clicked any icons or folders. I tried setting my folder options to “View in a single window,” but this did nothing. It was still making multiple Explorer.exe instances. I didn’t know what to do or how to fix it, so I resorted to a full wipe and reinstall. After the grueling task of reinstalling XP and all the programs I had before, things seem to be working normally. I don’t want this happening again, so I think I’m going to leave Chrome alone and stick to Firefox with the NoScript add-on running full time.
