Clean incoming e-mails no longer have the inserted notes.

After the major update to program version 4.6.691 and VPS 527-2, I noticed that the inserted note in incoming e-mails is no longer there. Granted, in the past, to my knowledge, I have only received clean e-mails ,for the inserted notes indicated that.
My e-mail clients are: Outlook Expess, Incredimail. SBC DSL yahoo is the internet provider that I use to download e-mail to my pc.
One obvious change from the update is the icons in the providers. They are different.
Under the INTERNET MAIL Resident Task Setting, I have clicked the tab for POP e-mail, "
Scan inbound e-mail" and “insert notes into clean messages” are checked.

While not suggesting there cannot be problems for others I just conducted a test using Avast 4.6.691 and Thunderbird as the mail client with a simple test message.

Result:

nowvoyager, please make sure that the emails ARE really being scanned.
To do this, e.g. monitor the “Last Scanned File” in the Internet Mail’s properties (or “Scan Count”). Is it changing/increasing as you’re receiving emails?

BTW what OS are we talking about here, exactly?

Thanks
Vlk

I could not find:
“Last scanned file” or “Scanned Count” under Internet Mail.
By the way, I could not locate properties. I only see tabs with popular mail options such as POP, SMTP, IMAP, etc.

I am using operating system Windows XP Home edition.

Thanks,
SR

It’s in the main On-Access Scanning window (with the list of the providers (the icons) on the left - the info is on the right)

See picture:

Aha, I found the “properties” screen/page.
This is the report from that page:
scan count: 9
Last infected: 1 (It was test file-Eicar.com)
It does give a detailed account on the scans.
I do get a visual notiifcation when an incoming e-mail and outgiong e-mail scan is taking place.

Thank you,
SR

Latest development:
I e-mailed myself from several web-based e-mail accounts including Yahoo, Excite, Ureach and Hotmail.
The e-mail that I received from the Ureach.com account did have an inserted note with the Avast tag. The others did not have an inserted note.
Yes, the scan count in the “properties” page is rising.

Thanks,
SR

Are these HTML or plain text emails?

Wow, I never thought of that!
After conducting some research, I realized that the HTML incoming e-mails do not have the inserted note with the Avast tag.
Now, the text incoming e-mails do have the inserted note with the Avast tag.
That is strange. The older version of Avast did have both HTML and text incoming e-mails contain the inserted notes with the Avast tag.

If you check the source of the message (i.e. all the headers, etc. - not just the “displayed” message) - do you see any traces of avast! note at the end?

I notice that you mention Yahoo, Hotmail and Excite.

Are you using any programs (such as YPops, Hotmail Popper, FreePops or Mr. Postman) to read your web based e-mail into your e-mail client?

When I look at the properities of the e-mails, the Avast tag for incoming e-mail is there. It is only with one e-mail client.
All I am using is Incredimail, Hotpop, Hotmail, Yahoo, Excite and DSL Yahoo.

thanks,
SR

Sorry, I don’t understand exactly - the tag is there (in the source) for all clients, but visible (in the “normal” e-mail message view) just in one of them, or even the source contains the tag for one client only?

I apologize; I was not clear.
The Avast tag for clean incoming e-mails is not visible.
I had to look at the extended header of the e-mail to find it.

I do not want to confuse the issue … but …

It probably needs to be made clear that scanning of mail by Avast and the inserting of “clean” messages will only happen for POP3 mail.

Incredimail is a “hybrid” client. It certainly accesses POP3 accounts and I assume that mail will be scanned by Avast in the normal way for POP3.

However, Incredimail also contains a built in reader of Hotmail messages. It is not entirely clear whether it is an HTTP “screen-scraper” or whether it uses WebDav access (I suspect the former). Either way, this is not POP3 mail and will not be scanned by Avast and will not have the “clean” message inserted.

Unless, that is, Avast has some changes we have not been told about.

I am quite certain that the inserted notes for clean incoming e-mail were visible before the major updates. The Avast tag was at the bottom of the page.

Now, the inserted notes for incoming e-mail from Hotmail, Excite and Yahoo are suppressed. They can be viewed by extending/expanding the header under “details” of the Incredimail program.

Granted, I am using SBC DSL e-mail service that allows me to access my e-mail on the internet or download it using POP. When I download it, I use Incredimail. Under details of the e-mails (Incrediamail), I can view the inserted notes of the incoming e-mail with the Avast tag.

I am having the same problem. I checked the boxes in the Resident Task Settings on the POP and SMTP setting to insert a note in clean messages and it works fine until I shut down my computer for the day or reboot it. After powering back up those setting are gone. Can anyone help? Thanks

Losing settings?
Change them and let avast! as you want.
Exit and shutdown all avast! providers (the last option in the system tray menu).
Boot 8)

I am very grateful for the assistance that I have received from this forum. It has been invaluable.
I decided to take this to Avast’s tech support.
I have been corresponding with Pavel Sedina, AVAST tech support, on this issue. I notified him that the problem is intermittent. Currently, the problem has returned. I am seriously considering UNINSTALLING Avast until Avast Tech support finds a resolution; I am confident they will eventually.
I wonder if I will experience any conflicts or problems if I try to reinstall Avast?

Thanks,
Samuel R.
