Clean Installing Avast After a Clean Install of Anniversary v1607 14393.10

Hello all,

Should I disable all these Defender settings before installing Avast?

Defender will turn itself off when you install Avast or any other 3rd party AV.

Hi Bob,

I’m not sure I can trust the standard answer you provided because I have read too many articles where people are concerned that both Defender and their primary AV are shown as running at the same time. So, if you would be so kind, please try to access Defender and confirm it is not running and also provide a screenshot of the settings I previously provided as well (if possible). In summary, I have read too many articles that talk about the new Defender running in a cooperative mode with any 3rd party AV that is installed.

Thank you

OK Bob, I did an image backup and I went ahead and installed Avast. It did disable Defender as you suggested but it did not disable it 100% as it did before the Anniversary update. Now, you can still open the Defender interface (from within Control Panel) where you could not do this previously and Defender now has a new option (called Limited Periodic Scanning) which allows it to peacefully co-exist (and work) with a 3rd party AV to provide a maximum anti-virus and malware solution. This is the co-existence issue that I did not understand and why I hesitated to install Avast initially. However, now that I understand how they might work together, I think I will pass on the Limited Periodic Scanning option. Also, I assume this new Defender co-existence option could cause some issues for those already running a 3rd party anti-malware solution alongside of Avast.

If you read the information put out by MS a while back, Defender isn’t resident but can be used as a second opinion if that’s desired.

(Jut to clarify your statement, Avast doesn’t shut down Defender. Defender turns itself off any time you install a third party AV.)
