Cleaning up DH's mess

First, let me say that if this is a 2nd post of mine, I apologize. My previous post seemed to disappear.

I’ve tried avast and Microsoft Security Scanner to try and clean up my husband’s laptop, but every time a file goes into the vault, more threats pop up. Hopefully I got the logs right. Help is greatly appreciated.

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I copied the code, clicked Run Fix, and things seemed to be running fine, but then a pop up said OTL had stopped working and I had no choice but to click End Program. It’s been about ten minutes, hard drive light is flashing, and there’s nothing on the desktop. Not sure what I should do now…please advise. Thanks so much for the help!

Reboot the computer please and continue to Combofix

After rebooting, I got the log below. Ran combo fix with no problems–log is attached. Computer seems to be running fine, but avast isn’t running yet to give me pop up threat alerts every few minutes. Should I turn avast back on and see what happens? Thank you!

I restarted avast and am very happy to report that not only are things running normally, but also there have been no threat alerts. I think this mess might be cleaned up! Please let me know if there is anything else I should do. Thank you so very much for your assistance.

Crap, maybe this isn’t over. I ran a boot scan before going to bed, and upon waking this a.m., found 7 files had been moved to the vault. A little window popped up saying the version of Windows is not genuine. It is and nothing like that has ever popped up to my knowledge. That stayed in the background in the lower right of the screen while everything else loaded. Things still seemed to be working okay until I got into IE’s history, when a blue screen popped up. I barely had time to begin reading it before the computer restarted. After restarting, the alert about windows not being genuine did not reappear. The only thing I can think of that I did differently is that the computer prompted me to let Java updater continue, and I said yes. I’ve been clicking no. Help, please!

The files that Avast quarantined were they in the following folders Qoobox and OTL_Moved files ?

Could you run a fresh OTL scan please

I thought there were 7, but there are only 6 new files in the vault, and they are in fact all OTL_Moved files. New OTL log is attached.

Thank you!

OK they were all quarantined earlier from the first OTL run, so they were impotent, just so much code ;D

How is the computer behaving now ?

Seems to be okay. The only funny thing that happened was that I went to wake it up and it rebooted. I didn’t touch anything that might have caused it. Reboot was normal, though, and things seem to be working fine and there have been no threat warnings. Is this ordeal over?

Other than making sure that all shields are active in avast, definition updates are automatic and scans are scheduled (currently set at weekly), is there anything else I should do before turning this laptop back over to my husband?

Follow the little spiel below to clean up and secure the computer ;D

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [emptytemp] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Misc%20screen%20shots/CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.
