Closing this forum

Just want to get something of my chest:

As stated in the description, this forum is for all kinds of things related to this webboard.
What I see is that almost anyone is posting just about anything in here.
It is starting to look like the off-topic forum.
Yes it sure does!
If I had anything to say about it, I would close it and delete every thread in it that doesn’t fit this forums topic.
Please respect the people from Alwil and follow the rules.

youre all heart , SARGE . ;D

Really simple fix re-open the Off-Topic forum after all they do let criminals out of

prison after serving their sentences ;D

If the posts here bother you so much why don’t you leave the forum?

EDIT:

If I had anything to say about it

Luckily you don’t :stuck_out_tongue:

P.S:Sorry for editing this post so much but previously when i wrote something here i thought it was another thread(silly old me)

Maybe Eddy want’s us to join Emma on her new board?
However, reopening the Off-Topic Forum would be much nicer. ;D

Well perhaps the title should be changed to General, ‘Topics about the forums, computer and security related issues.’

In the past this forum did generally (no pun intended) fall into this category and anything wildly different went to the Off-topic forum. That is no more and there are alternatives as previously mentioned.

There are two moderators from Alwil who can and do moderate this forum and they I’m sure can see the direction it is going and will act as they see fit. Yes there are things that don’t fit the ‘anything and everything about this board,’ but that has certainly always been the case since I’ve been a forum member. Heck we even have stickies on the forum that are unrelated the ‘anything and everything about this board,’ guide lines.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to see it develop into a full blown off-topic replacement, otherwise it would be likely that it could be closed by those who have that responsibility/authority, but I feel it does need a little room to breath. There would be no requirement or responsibility to have a question answered by the Alwil team, other than for the questions about the boards. Questions would continue to be answered just as they have in the past by forum members and by the Alwil team.

Lets not have this develop into a personal issue, because that would only give more weight to the subject title. We should be able discus this everyone has the right to raise a topic, especially as it does relate to the categorisation of the General forum.

So my vote goes to a change in title with a little scope to breath.

I vote for no flooding the General Topics with computer and security related issues not directly related to avast.
Wilders will be an anternative for this.

The issues at another Off Topic board (or reopening the old one) will be, in my opinion, who will be the Moderators and will they fill the needs/whishes of Alwil?

Like David said, there are two moderators from Alwil who can and do moderate this forum and they I’m sure can see the direction it is going and will act as they see fit. But Alwil is not answering a lot of questions in these boards…, the one from this thread, for instance.

Emails do not get answered either… :frowning:

Does anyone else see the irony of Eddy (whose computer knowledge I greatly respect) posting an off-topic post to complain about other people posting off-topic posts?

My opinion:
-Create a new thread named “PC & security news”

 • Keep Bob’s “I thought this might interest you”
 • Keep “Updates”

Make them all sticky, let everyone post in there his/her news & don’t allow replies, for easy reading. Do not allow members opening other threads of this sort in the “general topics” so it will stay clean and easy to read too.

I don’t see any irony at all it is about the content of this topic in the General forum and easily meets the ‘anything and everything about this board,’ description/criteria for the General forum.

I think my 2 cent would be similar to DavidR’s. As a happy forum browser who found the Off Topic forum closed all the sudden and have not idea of what happened, I think Off Topic forum functioned well as a safety valve and keep the other fora tidy. Even if the forum went “wild” due to the Dionysian nature of it, at times, Apollonian browsers could regard it functioning properly to keep them outside of the other fora. Human beings have two brains, which is not news.

It is also odd to see why Eddy, who is one of the oldest forum users, doesn’t seem to see the nature of a thread simply by glancing the title and the poster, which is what I accustomed to do almost reflexively. In most of times, I simply smile and leave the threads alone but decide to peek in at times, of course.

Hello,

Here is just my opinion. General just means general and this is an anti-virus discussion forum, maybe the anti-virus discussion forum. These two things I have grasped right, did not I?

Well I think everything that is related to avast security fits in this thread. Here I like to read about anti-malware in general, also about other AV products and vendors, and what kind of new things they offer. The time that an AV and FW product were enough, those days are gone forever, and probably will never return. So I want to read about what I have to do against scripts, what kind of new vulnerabilities exist, and how to protect against these. About Intrusion Detection, about System Monitoring, about Safe Browsing, all sort of things that are additional to Avast and the various protection it gives to my OS. The more because Avast is an all-round AV solution. For this security related news I do not want to go to another forum or to a search-engine, I want to read it here, and most of all I want it discussed here. I learned a lot here, and I have put my two cents in once in a while.

In this forum I do not need personal things of members or how they relate to other members, nor their flames or hang-ups.

They must not agree with me in technical issues, the more because I like to understand matters better when they explain their points of view into minute detail.

In this forum I do not need anything that is not related to security. These things are really what off topic means, I mean holiday photos, personal views on things other than security related. I think everybody here perfectly knows what should be in the general and what shouldn’t be, and if you have nothing to post about, do not post or go to another forum. ;D ;D

There are forums about knitting, embroidery, about games, about motorcars, and holiday resorts, about coins and stamps, religion, politics and whatever man has thought up. I for one stick to the Avast general forum for all things related to this board security wise and technically related to security and prevention of any kind of malware.
That is my point of view,

polonus

Polonus,
All people need to relax once in a while even Alwil
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=16362.msg138546#msg138546
It can’t be AV and Malware all the time, 100% of the time.
That’s my opinion. ;D

I would say that General things about this board are what they meant originally and is how it should be. Posting of personal websites, pictures, things that are not related to this board seem out of the realm of what they intended.

I would also say that comments such as the ABOVE are totally uncalled for and unnecessary and do not go unseen.
We, emma, suz, and I … did not open our little forum as competition or as a replacement for the Off Topic Forum.
We opened it as a simple little place for us to gab with people we know, a place to just have some fun… simple as that. We would greatly appreciate the snitty remarks made here by bob end immediately. There is NO mention of Avast at our forum nor the problems that do incur here at the avast forums. We also had no intention of advertising or trying to sway those here to come there or to divide people up. Can we not be allowed to have some fun without having to keep finding we are being poked at for doing so? What is the need for this?

This message is written against all I believe in. I believe personal things need to be handled personally.

HOWEVER… there comes a time when things no one else will dare say need to be said

enough already…

and enough said…

Here we go again… ::slight_smile:

Quote from: bob3160 At least we now know where those that brought down the Off - Topic forum have gone to. Grin I sincerely hope that they will all be happy at their new home. Smiley
Dear Connie and at least your Connie again and not just . I at least wished you folks well in your new endeavor which is more than can be said for your wishes. I have also removed your picture from the avast! gang album as you requested. Why is it that the only time you seem to post in here lately is to complain or look to cause another fight? Enough already.

look back bob… this is my only post complaining about anything… and my only post in weeks
Ive kept my mouth shut and ignored it all… Until now. You may have “wished us well” but
you said we … those who left and are at the new place… are responsible for closing the off topic here.

Well bob… you know that is not true… yet you couldtn resist saying so. It was closed because of
the constant fighting. The members who do happen to also use our forum never once fought in here
except for one. Your comment was mean spirited and seen for what it is worth.

Ive keep quiet for long enough. And still, am not saying all that could and should be said. Why?
Because it does no good. You always get away with it.

I do not, and it was not my intent to do so, want to turn this thread into about our forum and your
comments. I did however need to remark ABOUT Them and show that it is seen and we want it to
stop NOW. There is NO need for it.

Now… let this thread go back ot what Eddy intended it to be for and I happen to agree with him. It IS
turning into an off topic forum and it will be at risk of closing as off topic did (and its sad that it did). I
hope that is not the case.

I DO still come thru here to search for things when I need help with something as there is a huge amount
of very good information here. I will continue to do so.

Now… I am done… and you can stop rolling your eyes Darth  Im not meaning to startup anything… just
to put an end to it

Ehhhm didn’t you say some time ago you are leaving and you’ve presumably left Connie? Why does it matter to you what is happening here all of a sudden, you’ve left remember?

Connie
From my school days, I seem to recall that to end something means to stop it not to continue bring things up.
That was usually called nagging.
If you’ve got more to say, why not spit it out. It’s better than choking on it.
I’m still trying to figure out what I’ve been getting away with. I wish you would explain it to me.
You seem to think that everything some one says has to have a sinister meaning to it.
Have you ever considered that some of us don’t operate that way?
