Clueless

Dumped Norton…today started using AVAST !..works well but when using Outlook Express my email is scanned coming IN but I can’t even send an email OUT.

My ISP says the error message I am getting refers to my Antivirus program, (AVAST !) and something will have to be “tweaked” before I send email OUT… Using AVAST ! 4.6 Home edition

ALL help gratefully accepted :stuck_out_tongue:

ADD TO THE ABOVE MESSAGE…THIS IS EXACTLY THE MESSAGE I GET AND NO EMAIL LEAVES THE COMPUTER…GET EMAIL IN BUT CAN NOT SEND ANY OUT.

The server does not support a SSL connection. Account: ‘pophm.sympatico.ca’, Server: ‘smtphm.sympatico.ca’, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: ‘250 OK’, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

As far as I remember (my ex.ISP) Sympatico doesn’t use SSL (Secure Socket Layer). So I guess you have those boxes checkmarked inside your mail account properties (in Outlook Express - Tools / Accounts / Mail tab and then chose your account you are having problems with… then click on PROPERTIES… now when new window is open, click on advanced and untick those two options if you have them checkmarked)

Cheers !

Btw, avast! doesn’t work with SSL connections anyway…

avast’s Internet Mail provider doesn’t scan SSL (secure sockets layer) encrypted email traffic.
What is your Operating System?
Are your email accounts set up as your ISP suggests?
This looks like it is not the correct server address as it would appear to be a pop and not smtp server address (Account: ‘pophm.sympatico.ca’).

Has your email worked before installing avast?
Has your ISP changed the email to SSL since you installed avast?

avast need’s to have a third party software to scan SSL email.
Gmail and Avast Providers
Solution: Using GMail with Avast and a SPAM filter
Redirecting multiple SSL accounts

Thanks guys…a couple of us worked on it and have it fixed…to a degree.

Win2KPro is the system and sympatico has changed to SSL and even when we used an automated program from Sympatico the SSL boxes were checked off. We have discovered that one has to shut down OUTLOOK/EXCHANGE and INTERNET MAIL (in the Avast program)in order to SEND and RECEIVE using sympatico SSL.

In effect this means ones email is not being scanned as it comes in from Sympatico. I would assume that Sympatico Security filters feel they are doing the job before one gets a virus infected email.

Anyhow I will be looking into third party software email scanners that can handle SSL.

FOR DAVID R…re your questions…
Yes email accounts set up as per ISPs direction.
yes email worked well before installing AVAST! but I guess NORTON could handle SSL
I do know that we were advised some time ago that Sympatico was going to SSL but it had no effect on my email reception or ability to send… prior to today… when I installed AVAST !!!

Thanks fellows…I do appreciate all your input and after all it was only a couple of hours out of my life ,on the phone with an IT fellow, who helped me finally get it going !!!

;D Have a nice week.

OK, I’m glad you solved it…

Just quick one… Outlook/Exchange doesn’t have anything to do with Outlook Express. It’s just for MS Outlook/Exchange, and if you are sending/receiving your mails with Outlook Express you don’t need Outlook/Exchange provider enabled at all. Just in case you use MS Outlook.

Take care and have a great rest of the evening !
Btw, welcome to forums !
Cheers !

A belated welcome to the forums.

Norton may have had a plug-in for Outlook which would allow for the scanning of SSL email because effectively it is an integral part of Outlook. The same as far as I’m aware should be the same for avast’s plug-in for MS Outlook the Outlook/Exchange plug-in.

Now if you are using MS Outlook, somewhere in the settings is the plug-ins interface and you need to allow the avast plug-in. I don’t use Outlook only OE so I can’t say how to enable the plug-in from within Outlook.
